I go to other banks and have come to one conclusion. If I don't ask them to do too much, the tellers seem more than happy to help. However, if I want to return any rolls or make them ask other tellers for something, they frown and ask for my account number. Once this happens, the gig is up and I usually can't get anything else from them. One unfortunate side effect of this is that once I have been turned away by one teller, they always seem to recall me and refuse to help. None of this bothers me much since I got on my Barber dime kick.

Well, I work in Oakland Downtown and before getting my Jefferson dollar from BoA, I went to 10 different banks (within the 1 square mile area - BoA, WaMu, Wells Fargo, Union Bank, US Bank, various credit union banks) and asked for the roll.... none of them had any, but none asked me about my account either.... I didn't have any account with any of those bank, so I just went in, wait for my turn and then go straight to the teller and ask him/her if they have the new coin in roll.... they said no and that's it....

Well.... I do get my rolls of Jefferson from Bank of America, which is not my bank, and they didn't ask me for my account. The week before that, when I came to BoA, one of the representative said they don't have any rolls, but she can order a whole box (100 rolls) for me, if I wanted to...... I just said "I'll come back whenever u guys have the single roll).

When I came back to Bank of American latter for the Wyoming Quarter, one of the account representative (the one sitting at the table, not standing at the counter) came over to help (because the line was getting long) .... I asked her about the quarter roll and she said they don't have any but offered me her desk number and asked me to call her back next week. Well, I called her but they didn't have any so she told me to call her tomorrow.....

When the Jefferson dollars came out, I went to a different branch of my bank. I asked the teller if they have the Jefferson dollars. The teller asked if I had an account with their bank. I told them "yes I have an account". The teller then asked what my account number was. When I gave her my account number she immediately checked the computer to verify I actually had an account.

I couldn't believe I had to go through such a hassle in order to obtain a roll of Jefferson dollars.

I recently opened a free checking account with Wachovia just so I could get rolls without problems. A lot of banks in my area ask if you have an account and rather than get hassled I figure the $100 to open the free checking is just working capital. Also they have a deal (still on I think) that they will give you $25 if you keep the account open more than six months and the balance at $100 or higher (a free roll of $1 coins)
Rest in Peace

I have had great luck with banks in our small little town, as well as banks in nearby larger cities.

Sometimes I'm asked if I have an account, and when I explain I'm a coin collector, they always seem happy to help and supply me with what I need.

Gary:

How exactly do you explain that your a collector? You just say, "Oh, I'm a coin collector, and I just want a few rolls of Jefferson Dollars?" And they understand?

But yes I do agree that its sad that you have to go through so much just to get a roll of dollars such as giving the account number and everything.

Just with my experience with working in a bank as a teller, the reason that we ask if you have an account or not is for a couple of different reasons.

1 - Most of the time we get a limited supply of things people collect and we do need to serve our customers and make sure we can get them what they want. (With all of the dollar coins we have only been able to receive 4 rolls of each president, so since there is so few the customers deserve to get first grabs at them.

2 - In case something would happen with the exchange of money (if the teller would accidentally short you or give you too much, we would have no way to trace and have a paper trail where that money went to).

3 - At least at the bank I work at, I'm not sure how other banks handle this but, when ever we do a cash exchange with a person we have to enter in the account number into the system and run a full transaction. This transaction never effects or touches the account that has been given to us, but here again it is a form of a paper trail. The bank wants to know where all the money comes from and goes.

As noted in this area that #3 reason is what I've been told. Actually every transaction has to be documented due to all the theft, bank robberies, counterfeiting, etc. Around here in Chicago area, there are more banks than people, I think. They are everwhere. If you go to the downtown area, on one street, it is flooded with them including a Federal Researve. I like that one. They won't even let you walk down the street behind that place. Many banks are in reality just branches of the main one so if you have an account in one, you have an account in possibly hundreds. For example LaSalle Bank is in almost every suburb, many corners in Chicago and even in some stores. Just bought out by another bank so looks like I have to change thins again.
The main thing is to just open an account in many banks. Ask about the minimum and open an accout with that. I even have a few in Wisconsin. What ticks me off is one bank had a $10 minimum to open and when I wanted a $50 bag of cents they told me I couldn't have that since my account could not cover the $50 cash I wanted to use. Now that is nuts.

LaSalle Bank
I believe it was owned by ABN Amro, a Dutch bank, but was rumoured that would be purchased by Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC, but instead sold to Bank of America. I would have rather it been purchased by RBS Group.

When you wanted to buy the $50 bag of cents did they have $50 worth at the branch or would they of had to order them? For us, if we have to order money for a customer they do have to have the funds in their account to cover the purchase and to assure that they do buy the coins or currency ordered. If they had the coins there in the vault then they should of had no problem giving you the coins. Your account had all the requirements in it.

Thanks. Your right. I just heard it on the news again. If they make me change my checks, they'ld better pay for that.

Actually most banks in this area have large canvas type bags of coins in their vaults I found over a period of time. Not the little branch ones, but almost all the larger ones. The place I tried to get that bag did have them, but probably just to lazy to go for them. This was a large Charter One bank, was StPaul, that is really busy most of the time and I suspect going for something in the vault would have just held up to many people. It is also one of the banks I use with a great turnover of tellers so no one gets to know anyone so special requests are not appreciated I guess.
One place I go knows me so well they are willing to hold up a line to go to the vault for coins for me. I don't like holding up lines though since when it happens to me I really get ticked off.

If the bank wants to keep customers and have good relationships with their customers then they should do what ever it takes with in reason to please the customer. If they have the coins then they should have no problem in giving them to a customer. The other bank that I go to pretty much refuses to go get anything out of the vault, even if theres no other customers in the building, which has always drove me nuts since I know it's not that hard to go do.

The biggest problem at the bank I work at is that we never have any coin in the vault, the only thing people ever ask for is the Presidential dollars which we do keep in stock, and they want like 1 or 2 half dollars, which we dont keep in stock. Other than that we never have a demand for coins so we try to not keep many since it takes up space that we could use for things we need.
