Northerncoins,
Estimation is that probably only less than 0.1% of the population is interested in this metal. None of my family, friends or colleagues are buying this darn thing. I agree market is flooded with silver; because there is almost no retail demand.

So silver closed up today and I received an email from APMEX today with several good deals. 5oz APMEX bars for $93.99 , 5 ASE for $100, and a few others.....I wonder if they know silver is going to drop next week? I hope not because I couldn't resist a few of these. We will see.

Some argue that silver such as ASE won't be sold once purchased because of its collector value. I don't agree and think a large percentage of individuals would sell if the price was right. Because of this, there are millions of ounces each year purchased and set on the sideline to be potentially sold at a future date. To overcome this, industrial usage would have to dramatically exceed supply for really high prices, IMO. This is also the reason I usually only purchase vintage poured bars from mints no longer in business. I guess Morgan dollars would be a similar strategy.

I have personally noticed companies having sales right before silver goes lower as well. That makes me come to assumption silver is going lower when I see these sales.

I dont think they know silver is going to drop, its just a sale. Silver has dropped for the last few years so I guess it just seems like that lol. People remember the losses more so then the gains.

You might be right northerncoins lol. I will never forget buying ASE's and very soon after silver dropped considerably lower and I was upset.

Mullen,
You need to read weekly COT futures report. Bullion dealers are classified as commercial traders; since they hedge their inventory routinely (short position against gold).
Besides many online specials offered, what concerns me is that they're still holding huge amount of short positions. Apparently, the plan is to sell physical first; then close the short position after a big price slump.
That's why I am afraid gold price might go very low, in the coming weeks or months.

The future of silver...
It has been money for thousands of years. This is one reason I like having my stack. I've got a few friends into silver now. Unfortunately, most just think I just really like the coins (which I do of course). I believe that silver will be used as money again when the dollar completely crashes.
Of course I try to buy on the dips, but overall I'm not too worried about what its is value is in dollar terms.

Welcome to CCF realmoney!
I'm interested in your statement that "silver will be used as money again when the dollar completely crashes". I just wonder who is going to use it besides the less than 1% of the population that even owns PM's?

Thanks fistfulladirt! There is so much information here. I love it so far!
I believe that the dollar will collapse like every other fiat currency. Then I believe we will have a breif period where cash is king. Then a period of straight bartering. This bartering will lead to silver being used as money again. Straight bartering isn't efficient in the market place. If I want your vegetables and I have liquor to trade, but you don't want my booze, we will need to find some medium of exchange.
This is where silver will come into play. Yes, a tiny percentage of the population holds silver now. But it will disperse rather quickly when dollars become worthless.
For example, I live in an apartment, so I can't grow much food. I could go to a local farmer and buy some food with silver. Just how I see this experiment with global fiat currencies unwinding..

I just don't see anywhere near enough silver out there to be dispersed among millions of people.

Maybe I am over-estimating how much is out there. Didn't the United States us silver as the main form of currency before the creation of the Fed? The population has grown a lot since then, but there has also been more mined. Of course, if there isn't much silver out there than the stuff we have would be worth more in this scenario.
So do ever see silver being used as money again?

That is why I believe some hard money will make its return. I don't believe the laws of economics can be suspended forever. Who knows though? People have been saying that for decades.
