quote: I do not know why the idea of having the CAC experts look at up to 20 of your coins for free to determine if they are of a PQ quality is a bad thing?
I have a lot of reasons why this is a 'bad thing,' or at least not something to jump up and shout about. I'll give you two: 1.)A 'PQ' designation is completely meaningless and leading anyone to believe it has meaning is prima facie nonsense; 2.)Coin grading and authentication is convenient shorthand for dealers and collectors. Anytime the focus goes away from the coin and to the plastic or the sticker, then you might as well leave the coin at home. Everyone should know that a coin in an MS-65 slab with a silly PQ sticker provided by an 'expert' still needs to be examined closely by the collector as I've found MS-63s and MS-64s that I've liked much better than coins that have made it into MS-65 slabs. I'm not saying it's not clever marketing, but if each sticker costs a nickel, I'd rather have the nickel.

In certain ways I agree with the above.... that a collector needs to still view the coin and make sure he likes it....after all each collector has his own likes and dislikes... toning vs blast white for example..... but in some ways lets draw a parallel to movie critics... Siskel, Ebert, Roeper ... sometimes you find a expert that you agree with....you like the way they review.... if you find a critic that has the same values you do then you can certainly use that critics knowledge to help yourself in movies or coins... but back to my point.... there is no downside with the very nice offer that CAC has set up at Coinfest... They are offering to look at up to 20 coins FOR FREE per person collectors only not dealers... if your coming to the show...why not take advantage of the offer....that was my point... what does the CAC sticker do for you... it alerts a new network of dealers that stand behind the CAC label that the coin is truly PQ and worth more money.... if you want to sell it, the value has increased because this network of CAC dealers will pay more for them....

I have to admit, it is a brilliant scheme. Evaluate all the same coins over again, millions of dollars to be made, all over again. Simple slabbing and certification is not generating enough revenue anymore, everyone needs a sticker now too. Start out by giving them out for free. Then build the fear that everyone needs a sticker on their coins. And we get not just 11 grades for mint state coins, which no one can agree upon, but now there will be 22 grades for mint state coins! Oh, I forgot the NGC coins must have "stars upon thars", so that brings the total of mint state grades to 44! Of course a split hair can still be split, so in a few years we will need the plus-plus designation, to bring it up to 88 grades for mint state coins, because everyone should have only certified star PQ++ coins in their collection.

certainly that is one way to look at it, another way to look at it is that CAC feels that TPG's have failed recently in certain ways and that they are looking to correct this problem... I want to keep my mind open for the moment and see more of what CAC has to offer before making any judgement either way....

How is this service going to work at the show? With so many coins floating around the CAC getting stickered do you leave your coins there or what?

You submit the coins at the CAC table, they will have an onsite grading room set up in the building... Security guards take the coins to the grading room for review, stickers, etc....and then they are returned back to the CAC table for pick up....
It is just like NGC, PCGS do at the major shows....similiar system

Coinfest, for allowing the CAC into the show, your whole collection is CAC worthy. Of course, I'm joking. By the way, do you know how the stickers look like?

So is there a minimum value of the coin that has to be submitted? can I submit a sample slab. Moderns?

I would suggest only higher end pq coins
sample slabs and moderns IMHO would be a waste of time

It is my understanding that only NGC and PCGS coins will be CAC acceptable and that moderns (post 1964) and sample slabs etc will not be accepted for evaluation.
Remember this system is by dealers for the benefit of dealers. Dealers (like JA) want to be able to buy coins sight unseen knowing that they are getting a quality coin for the grade. As it is right now only the most generic coins trade sight unseen and even then at a significant discount from where a sight seen coin would trade.
John is one of the strongest buyers of truly PQ coins and he has expressed disappointment in the dismal grading the last few years and he is trying to make his job easier. If he looks at a coin and evaluates it as PQ the he won't have to evaluate it again later if it comes back past him. I cannot fault him for trying to simplify his job. If he makes a buck in the process, I guess that doesn't bother me either, he is awfully good at what he does.

so if I want my PCGS G06 1892 Barber dime stickered would it be sticker worthy? Lets say the grade on this coin is spot on to its appearance. Are they going to not sticker coins that aren't high grades?

Not to me, I just need an example of ANYTHING with the label on it so as to have a representative specimen of the label. Naturally I want it on something as cheap as possible. I don't want to waste money on an expensive coin I don't need just so I can have a label. I have too much trouble with that on some of the rare slabs now. Some slab varieties ONLY come with gold coins in them. The only specimen of the sixth generation of INS slab that I know of has a PROOF Half Cent in it.

I really wish I had more info on what CAC will be stickering, but I do not.... I would say that you will be able to attend Coinfest and ask them in person....that in itself is a start...
This was a email sent from Legend Numismatic:
A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT CAC The new coin stickering service is about to begin operations. We do not have any information yet about submissions. However, we are pleased to announce that CAC will be attending the COINFEST Show and will be stickering coins for free (max 20 per collector) on Saturday only (time allowing).

I on the other hand will not be attending Coinfest, that's why I'm trying to find someone who can get a relatively inexpensive piece sticked.
