Hey dave, I've read about your penchant for collecting 21's and was just wondering if you have an engraved Denver in your collection?

An engraved Denver is worth more than I am.

Quote: Courtesy of the ample silver stock piles generated by the over 270 million silver cartwheels melted via the Pittman Act of 1918, What stockpiles? All of the silver from the dollars melted under the Pittman Act went to Britain and/or India. The silver for the Morgan dollars the mint had to go out onto the open market and buy. (also a requirement of the Pittman Act.)

The Pittman Act resulted from a German propaganda effort which convinced the Indian people that the war was forcing Great Britain to run out of silver. India represented as much population as the rest of the Empire combined, and they were people who only accepted British paper scrip because a system was in place allowing them to redeem it for silver whenever they wished. The system worked - not much silver was needed for redemption as the people trusted it - until the Germans planted the seed of doubt. So Britain needed a lot of silver fast and we had $300,000,000 in Morgans sitting in Treasury vaults. Of the 270 million Morgans melted, 260 million went to Britain and were replaced on the open market. Quote: Roltf... whats your guess on what one would bring today? One hammered for $13,500 last June.

I'm not a huge Morgan fan, especially the blah 1921. BUT, that 1921 is definitely a remarkable coin. Those surfaces are amazing.

I definitely think that a '21 with exceptional eye appeal is much harder to locate. And SD is right. Once a '21 starts to tone it usually doesn't turn out well. The light, even golden toning on this one is amazing. I can't wait to get it in. I was also thinking about how Morgans would be priced today if the government had never melted down those 270 million specimens. That is a whole lot of food for thought. Personally, the idea of much cheaper MS Morgans makes me a very, very happy guy. When it comes to these ladies I don't care about rarity or how much money I could make selling them. I just want MORE. I love 'em, man, I love 'em.

Were it not for the Pittman Act, Morgans would be bullion coins with a few Condition Rarities. And VAMmers would have surrendered years ago.

Quote: What is that? 1921 was the only year Morgans were struck in Denver. The first were sent to the Director of the Mint. The next ten were engraved numerically from 3 to 12, commemorating the occasion. They are known to have all been in one place at a coin sale in the 1920's but have dispersed since and a couple are missing.

I recall a member here posting that he thought his grandfather had an engraved 1921. Unfortunately, he hasn't posted since last fall so I don't know if we'll ever know if he found it.
