Looks like the real deal to me. Die crack along base of headdress confirms it. Nice pick up

One of the things I love best about numismatics is that bragging is encouraged and showoffs applauded.

I agree with this pic it sort of looks like Machine Doubling, but you can definitely see split points on the arrow heads. So I would have to say it is a Doubled Die. Nice coin.

I won't be able to get better pics until Friday, but I'm 100% confident that this is the Snow-6 DDR variety. As Waxemm said, the arrow points are fully split. Rick snow has a few in MS listed on his website right now if you want to see better pics of where the doubling is.

OH, that's so awesome. It causes me to You better keep more than one eye open to find one. About 45,589,000 were minted and he says there are only about 20 found. Just amazing. Spadone's major Variety Guide of 1963-64 mentions the 1883 having a recut "U.S America" and a recut "America" but no mention of this variety. I wondered when it was discovered and publicized? Would you tell us where you cherry picked it? Like at a Coin show, dealer store, auction, yard sale, or what? Just to good a story not to know how.

Thanks everyone. Found it on ebay of all places. I get to travel an awful lot for my job and usually I find things in coin shops on the road. Found an 1857 type of 1856 FE this week!

I'm always amazed at how much better his coins are in hand versus his scans. He's set in his ways, I've tried to help him take better pics but he loves that old scanner. I told him he was leaving money on the table.
