Hi Malberg - most of my pic's are done with an iPhone. You can get great shots with a little bit of practice.
Here's a tip or two to take better shots.
Place your coin on a dark backdrop without patterns Find a solid object (perhaps a drinking glass about 2.5 inches tall) Place your iPhone on the glass to keep it steady use the zoom feature to size the picture to fit the display (or just short of the edges) Take your picture and edit it on the phone using the simple cropping/rotating tools Upload your pic/email your pic to your computer Use the tools on you photo editor to sharpen contrast, soften/reduce brightness Use the Image Optimizer to size your image if it isn't small enough
You'll be making some nice photos before long. The iPhone is your friend!! Good luck!

Yes please. The picture should feature the subject coin and have as little background as possible.

the ones at the very top of the forum are just the subject coin with nothing in the background the other pictures should be deleted.

Malberg - sorry, pictures are better but I still can't tell if this is plated or coined on an un-plated planchet. The camera is trying to focus on the backdrop. Tap the center of the coin on your screen and this should bring the coin into focus. Your picture taking took a leap in the right direction. Keep at it!!

Does the coin have normal cartwheel luster? Typically a plated coin will not. They may be shiny, but the won't show cartwheel luster like a MS coin does. Luster is created by the microscopic radial flowlines on the coin. A thin plating typically won't affect the design details, but it will fill in those microscopic lines and wipe out the luster.

In this situation, the best thing to do is put your coin on the table or surface you are taking the photo on, and place several cents around it. 5 should, normal colored cents, different tones. That way we can see the difference in color. Here is an example :

Interesting question, did you find this in a costumer wrapped roll or did you find this in a mint roll?

The coin was found in a tip jar it was mistaken for a dime that's when I noticed that Lincoln isn't on the dime and I took a closer look. Is there any specialists in Southern California that could take a look? It seems as if this is something someone needs to see in person since I'm not familiar enough to with coins to distinguish it.

Your local coin shops, are obvious, when it comes to variety coins. (Error coins). This is the best place for identifying errors. We just need the right photos, and we can diagnose your coin for you. We have the best error experts here. Your coin is most likely an unplated coin error, but to confirm it. A clear picture like above would be perfect. Front and back of the coin.
