The 50c are still commonly found, the designs all look the same at first glance and they are all well worn but the 20c have aged slightly better but are rarely found in change now

There are still a number of them around, all you have to do is look.

Some better quality one are turning up, which is a worry....are they from someones missing collection or have some hoarders decided to spend them.
Rest in Peace

So is there anywhere is Australia that has a large number of NT, Qld and/or ACT 20c pieces. I only find about 1 NT for every 11 Vic and NI coins (1 in 5 for Qld and ACT).

Here (NSW) I mostly find NSW, Norfolk, NT and Tas 50¢ and Qld and WA seems scarcest.
With 20¢ NSW and WA seem most common and ACT, SA and (particularly) NT seem hardest to find.

I finally got my act together & counted all my COF coins. This is what I have apart from the Unc set I bought when they were released. The number after the hyphen is the number of 20¢ I have with errors included in the total.

A few of these numbers may be a little skewed as I've done a couple straight swaps with other forum members, but apart from the swaps all of these were found in Brisbane. All the above coins are circulated.

So, sorted by totals decreasing:

20¢

ACT 55 - 16
SA 49 - 4
NT 48 - 9
NI 38 - 2
Vic 34 - 10
Qld 27 - 8
WA 27 - 7
NSW 24 - 9
Tas 24 - 4

50¢

Qld 101
Vic 77
NI 42
NSW 28
Tas 21
NT 19
ACT 17
WA 16
SA 15

I still average 2-3 of each denomination each week.

Wow Nancy. You have a heap of the coins that I find hardest to get, i.e. ACT and NT 20c pieces. I find about 1 NT coin every 14000 coins I search though . If anyone is will to swap any ACT, QLD and NT 20c or SA 50c please let me know.

I have just (been through $200 worth of 20c pieces and only found 2 federation coin. The stocks appear to be getting low (p.s. Nancy you have a reply. Thanks!)

I sorted $400 of 50¢ Yesterday and found 16 CoF (8 different -everything except Queensland). One was not worth keeping though.
That is at least twice what I would expect normally and also found a 1985, 1993, rams head, several good Charles & Di and Royal visits plus a large number of extremely good (but common year) ones from 1970 to 1984.
My wife suggest that coming up to Christmas if people are short of spending money, they cash in their money boxes -more boxes cashed than any other time of year. That releases harder to find and good condition coins back to circulation. I have my doubts that the Money Box factor would be significant -maybe I was just lucky this week.

Does anyone have a better theory or comments on this suggestion?

G'day, I suspect that Mrs Jeff may be on the money, so to speak.
Please keep up the good work: I haven't got a full set of CoF yet, so maybe we can talk a swap ...

It could be true, but it could be luck as well. Dang it, you have a 1985. I have been looking for that for ages now. :(

I'd like to thank Nancy for the swap we did. The coins are great. The federation coins are really becoming difficult to find so if you want some (without buying them) I would start looking for them and saving them now while you still can (sounds a bit dooms day or something ). I'm still happy to do some swaps with other people if they are interested (for federation and/or other coins).

I think I would be inclined to agree with you wife Jeff, I've also noticed some pretty good looking older coins. I hang on to all 'good lookers'.
