I think I see a tiny amount of wear on the high points of Liberty's hair, e.g., below and behind the ear. This wear has long since been patinated over. AU58.

I will guess AU-58 details: cleaned. My concern is the coin doesn't seem to have much original mint luster even around the stars and reverse lettering which are areas where usually one of the last areas mint luster is worn away. The coin is basically blast white with little to no wear to which I have a hard time coming up with a reason why the luster would be diminished that does not include things that are not considered market acceptable. I am assuming the photos are taken in a similar way as the other Morgan dollars which all are dripping with luster. Nevertheless, still quite a coin!

I counted on this one coming back cleaned....definitely expected that....but.....man they killed me on this one. I still think this one should warrant at least 58 details, was hoping for MS details...regardless its staying with me.

Looking at the old thread(especially the pictures on page 2) I can see why they gave it a details grade, however I cannot understand why they knocked it down to AU-50. Even in the worst possible light it should be mid-AU detail, at least in my opinion.

I can see some hairlines, but where is the tooling supposed to be?

Probably the tooling and whizzing are the same thing. If it's been whizzed it was done very lightly.

Makes me want my coins tooled from here on in.
I'll buy the Details slab but they were way too unkind with the description and the grade is straight-up "he hate me" territory.

The more I look at these coins....and the more opinions I get on my submission....the more I agree....ANACS hates me ha. fortunately the ones that have been put in details slabs I planned on keeping anyway....but when they detailed a coin....they really nailed me.

I missed this one big time! I missed the whizzing and the tooling but I don't recall seeing the other pics on the other thread. I figured it was cleaned .... as most of the Reeded Edge Bust Halves out in coin land have been.... but figured since it was not obnoxious they'd overlook it. Boy, was I wrong!
ANACS has really been tough lately. Ouch!

The more that I look at it I think the tooling is in the lines in the shield and in the hair behind the neck.

I never thought about the fields being whizzed, but on a closer inspection, I will have to concede that it is a possibility. In the first picture of the bust have a look in the field around in front of the middle star, behind the bust.
I wasn't worried about the lack of lustre. In a coin of this age, the lustre is often completely masked by patination.
I would jump at buying this coin in the slab as marked! If I was lucky enough to get it, the first thing I would do, is break it out.

Didn't attempt the grade but noticed the systematic looking scratches throughout the coin, thinking it was cleaned.
