Yea, I think that's where we might be on this one. Quote: Unfortunately, not original surfaces. Cleaned, retoned/darkened. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one, I think the surfaces are fine. If it was, it was while it was still in circulation

Regarding cleaned or not...I think that I really do not know what to look for to determine whether it is cleaned or not. I am wondering if those who have an opinion on this coin could say what is it they see on the coin which leads to their conclusion? Maybe I can learn something here!!

The dark halo affect around the stars and Liberty are indicative of being retoned. After looking at thousands of large cents I can tell that the color just isn't right. It's too dark for the amount of wear that this coin has received. The color should be lighter on the high points of the devices.

Well dang, let that be a lesson to me. I thought the lighter areas were from normal finger and thumb wear, and that the coin had just toned darker for some reason. Next time it's ok to give me the bad news early, I can take it

My photography skills must be worst than I thought. I looked at the coin again, and it just looks like a nice brown Here's the same 1847 next to a '48. I'm going to send them into Bob Grellman as soon as I can get his contact info. I also started a thread on it in the Classic section.

I still think it's been re-colored but I could be wrong.

Yea, it still might be recolored. One thing I'm going to have to do is check white balance/brighten the pics. They seem to always show up darker when I post them. That's a white desk they are on, not dark grey.

I see a suggestion to send to Bob Grellman. I just want to say I think its great when Guys like Bill Fivaz and I guess Bob Grellman and some others spend their lives looking at a million coins to gain that knowledge and for a couple bucks will look at your coin for you and help you. Ive sent a coin to Bill Fivaz and he sent me the results and some good marketing tips on selling the coin. That's the true meaning of he does it for the love of the game.

Yes it is. I sent the coin to Mr Grellman yesterday am. I consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to do it.

Bob is one of THE EAC gurus. The fact that he attributes coin for a buck is awesome.

N-20, well Grellman's the Man. I don't think any of us even said N-20. Uhg! Attributing 1847s is a pain.
