Looks like that RIBBON had to get there from something on the die, it could have been a foreign piece on the die. That is what I think it is, it is really cool though and really adds to it. I am very glad you found one like I said they are very RARE.

Do you think that it could be a new die variety because of the little east-west notch under the top of the curve?

I do not know if it would be a new die are not...you would have to have james wiles look at it to let you know that.

I got an email from Dr. Wiles today. Here's an excerpt: "Your coin is indeed RDV-006. It is now listed as die 4, stage A, EDS. I will get it up on https://www.varietyvista.com shortly." |

Not to be a wet blanket...but there is no way to set a price on this and there is no way to guess how rare it will be. A bag of them can show up tomorrow. How many have been found up until now is not an indication of rarity. How rare or common a coin is can only be determined by how many show up after a few years of the time that something new is discovered. Could be rare or there could be a million of them. Time will tell. Until then, it's anybody's guess. Also, Rare doesn't mean high dollars. I have a coin here that is a nice doubled die on a 1972 S cent , business strike. I have the first one found and in ten years , only one other has been uncovered. It is therefore more rare than the 1969 S Doubled Die Lincoln Cent. In fact, since the overall mintage of the 1972 S cent is less than the overall mintage for the 1969 S cent, my coin should remain more rare. It is more rare than the 1913 Liberty nickel. This coin is more rare than many coins that sell for $50,000.00 or more. That does not mean that my coin would ever be worth that much. So, you can't tell what's rare until some reasonable time elapses after a discovery and rarity is not a good indicator of value, especially in the world of Die Varieties. Edited by foundinrolls

If more people started looking, then more would be found. I'm sure when the '92 wide-am was discovered for the first time, it was uncertain how valuable and rare it would be too. All I know is that only 6 have been found so far, and I'm glad to have found one. But I do understand what you are saying, and I respect your very professional opinion, so I'm not getting my hopes up or anything on this unproven coin. But I can hope....

The "ribbon thing" on the bottom of the building is a fiber and its shadow is cast on the coin. Try looking a little closer at the images.

You're right Chuck. Before I mailed it off, I wiped it off with a dry towel and it came off.
Wow, I said "off" 3 times in one sentence!
Is this variety worth putting on coppercoins.com?

On the initials "FG". Look at the G on the pic above and look at one from your pocket. On a regular one, the bottom right hand corner will not have the "tail" going down. That should have started in 1989. If you have one, then congrats, but if you don't then your G kinda looks like a C.

I found one too, in early September, 2007. It's from die#1 EMDS. It is graded MS64RD by ICG. Right now, unitl the new CPG comes out, they are the only reputable TPG that recognizes this variety. I believe that if it gets listed in the fifth edition of the CPG the top two TPG's will recognize it. At that point it will be decision time. Leave it the way it is? Crack it out and send it to one of the top tier guys? Submit it as a cross-over? Which one to use? Decisions, decisions, decisions... |
