Here's another reference I used: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...50244&src=pr
Perhaps this is a different variety? If so, I need to get more educated.

Ok, here's another I bought, ungraded. I'm fairly certain this is NSF:

53-NSF-5c--Mule?

and here's the reverse:

53-NSF-5c--Mule?

Then, taking a reverse from an ICCS certified NSF Mule, and doing a digital overlay in PS, the position of the leaf above matches to this one:

53-NSF-5c--Mule?
(ICCS certified NSF Mule reverse)

Hmmm.... Now I'm not sure. I don't have a Charlton myself, so I'll have to borrow one from the library tomorrow. My catalog lists 6 different varieties, although only four of them are affordable to us mortals. (I use Pierre Charest's "The Book of Canadian Coins and Their Varieties".)

Topher, thanks for all your advice! Admittedly, I'm attempting something rather difficult, especially since I just started collecting Canadian again after many years. Perhaps I'll have a better clue when these coins arrive, and I'll pick up that book--thanks!

Going by my Charltons, it appears you have a far leaf variety.

Hmm...perhaps there are different degrees of "far" and "near"?

I just say that because this ICCS confirmed "far" is noticeably different to my eyes:

53-NSF-5c--Mule?
or:
53-NSF-5c--Mule?

Again, a graded, confirmed near:
53-NSF-5c--Mule?

Now the coin in question:
53-NSF-5c--Mule?

I'd like to learn these differences...can anyone explain it in empirical terms?
I don't claim to "know", and I'm a little baffled at trying to use diagnostics to spot the mules. I have built several diagnostic tools in photoshop using confirmed "near" reverses to help figure this out. If anyone can cite empirical reasons why one coin is "near" vs. "far" it would be most appreciated.

With the graded coin on top you can see how much closer to the denticles the tips of the maple leaf are to your coin on the bottom. At least to my tired old eyes anyways. Other may have a different opinion.

Thanks for that...I'm going to have to revisit this and see if it looks differently.

Ok, you guys are totally right about this. I needed to do more research to understand these differences. While I haven't found any rarities yet, I now know what to look for--thanks for all your insight!

I think it is a far leaf. The leaf on the right should be closer, and the leaf on the left should almost be touching the edge. Ill post scans of my '53 SF mule when I get the chance.

KurtS, I have a request: If you have the time, the patience, and the desire, I want to learn to do an overlay. I have PS 7.0, but I get lost every time I try! Can you make a list of the steps, which button to press, and go thru it, step-by-step? There are SO MANY buttons, that I get entirely lost, and just shut down! In the meantime, I'll kick it around AGAIN! Thanks,
Dick

Dick,
Sure--when work quiets down a little, I'll post the basic steps to creating an overlay of images, as well as transforming the photos (rotate/scale) for easier comparison.

Thanks Gosd, and as others have nicely pointed out, the 9 is an indicator as well.

No luck this time, but I'll keep trying!

KurtS, Thanks. When you have time, and are so disposed, then I'll be all EYES! And will have my PS open to do what you say, when you say. The overlays are SO important, when it comes to a close one, and the markers are worn, or the coin in hand is prior to the ones used in the photo listed. I am very new at varieties, and just starting to grab every Canadian (coin) thet comes down the pike. I can rotate, size, and crop, etc. Most of the camera software programs have this, and it is simple. The overlays are the hard one foe me. This will pass, no doubt, and I'll be looking for "more worlds to conquer"!.
