Personally I hope they rake him over the coals. The owner of that site has signed up here under several different ID's with the sole intention of spamming this forum.

He has sent extremely nasty emails to myself and Susan when his posts were deleted. He also runs a business that for a fee, he will scour the internet looking for fax numbers to spam.

He's very sneaky and I don't feel sorry for him, especially since it's extremely obvious he's trying to benefit from a branding that ebay has already earned.

Everyone hates big business only cause they didn't think of it first.

Too bad Mike Rowe didn't win his case

Thanks for putting it all in perspective Bobby.
It's often difficult to get the full picture out here.

I had no idea about the defendants reputation.
cannot really feel bad for him myself now.
found out he is being sued for trademark infringement
and dilutuion. I personally read all the court documents
and it still bothers me regardless of his rep. or anyone elses.
however the law is the law and until it gets changed it sticks.
it just amazed me that the word ebay would be all inclusive
of any and all internet auction sites. and that any use of two or more
of the same colors of their logo lettering is infringement.
just a note here to state I am for all and any business structure
big or small. if anyone has more interest in the details of this case
email me and I will send you the court documents. you can decide for yourself.

what did we do before
ebay ? it's put a lot of coin dealers out of business (kind of what Walmart did to retail) and the ones who remained, had to jump on their
bandwagon or ?

I think I'd rather have better selection and competitive prices on ebay than be limited by the local coin stores.

As far as hurting the little guy goes, I can't imagine a place where you could start up a business for basically the cost of inventory alone.

Yes, I agree with selection and prices. but who is really gaining
here (unless you just buy) to stay in business one must sell.
there are more options to do both on the web than just local coin dealers. the profit margin selling on ebay is so minimal. it is not worth my time or effort to sell on there. they came up with a great idea I admit that. the rake they pull in is phenominal.
it's also sad that coins prices are now basically dictated by them
no sense in even wasting your money having pcgs slab a coin for you that they put a value on and it is not even worth barely 60% of that if you put it up for auction. naturally any big time coins will
go out to the real auction houses anyway, but the average joe does not deal in them. anyway, like I stated, ebay-great place to buy, lousy
place to sell. sometimes when one gets a little too big for their britches, eventually they get put in their place. or out of their place. prediction: they won't last. it will be Flee Bay...

My mortgage company would wholeheartedly disagree with you. Susan routinely buys on ebay and has made as much as 30-40% reselling the same coins on ebay. It's like any other business, you have to know what you're doing to be profitable.

If the internet blows up tomorrow, when the smoke clears, ebay and Google will still be standing. Trust me.

I am really glad to hear a resale success story.
I am not trying to put down any business. i,like anyone
else have an opinion and I also like to hear other opinions.
if you can use it and make it work for you than that is a plus.
My main reason for the post was just to bring light to the issue
that the little guy (once again, regardless of who it is)
does not stand a chance competing with a giant. to most, that statement may seem pointless anyway. the reason I stated that ebay
would not last, is that they will eventually hang themselves or get too
greedy and the truth about what is really going on there will come to the surface. But heck, I am not going to lose any sleep over it anyhow. To each their own. You may put this post to sleep if you like
now.
Merry Christmas to all
Almost forgot, you see I am middle aged and I do that on occassion.
so to those who do not celebrate Christmas, then Happy Holidays.

I'm curious to hear what the truth is.

Yes, I'd also like to hear the truth. Despite its flaws, ebay has made coins available at competitive prices to us little guys who are generally unable to purchase coins at coin shops which are too far distant nor bid against major purchasers at the biggie coin house auctions. And as stated earlier, ebay is setting the actual market value of coins, not the values PCGS nor Coin World nor other pricing guides would want them to be. As an aperiodic coin seller on ebay, I seldom lose money on a coin sale. One merely needs to be educated in what one sells, know the market, and know how ebay works. The forum has many, many topics from wannabe sellers who have burned themselves because they failed to educate themselves on ebay coin sales (exacerbated by refusal to accept responsibility for their lack of knowledge).

I'm also middle-aged (and then some) but am not Christian, so "Happy Holidays" is most appropriate although any well-wishes stated in any manner at this time of year is most welcome as a gesture of good will, something that is sadly lacking the rest of the year.

Truth is always a good thing ,,I just wonder if the truth turns out to be that ebay is functioning at a higher level than they are being given credit for will be just as adamantly expressed ?

there is no doubt that ebay is fraught with dangers and pitfalls for the un knowledgeable ,,but show me a large corporation that does not function in the same fashion ,,knowledge and power are king in every circumstance within their ranks and outside their ranks as well for all who venture into business with them .

I function on ebay both as a seller and a buyer ,,and thus far the good far out weight the bad .

ebay reported $1.1 billion in earnings (profit) last year. Their stock has averaged 42% gain per year for the last 5 years (even after last year's drop). They'll be ok.

No. ebay's stock hasn't gone up significantly since it's last major increase in 2003 during which I bought stock at about $28/share (followed by a second investment at $40/share after which it tanked and has stayed down ever since). In fact, following it's two for one split in Feb 03, it's gone down in value. And, it gives no dividends under the guise of "needed for capital investments". As an investment in recent years, it leaves a lot to be desired. eBay Stock Report . Happy was the day I sold it on a spike late last year, lost "only" about 20%, still watch ebay's stock reports to keep from regretting my decision to sell. No regrets yet.

I think they would lose because it would be like a generic cola company calling themselves KocaKola or ColaCoke and using a similar can design to cola cola's.

Sorry, that percentage was earnings. In 1999, the split adjusted price was as low as $1.22. But the price now is still high for the earnings. But the company is just fine. Eventually, the earnings will catch up the to price, or the price will drop to match the earnings.
