I like the Crusader state coins but haven't taken the plunge into them yet. I think because they tend to be expensive and I find the legends very difficult to read. As usual though Anoob is a trend setter around here so who knows one may find it's way into my collection soon. Very nice coin.

I would respond more but I just feel like a fan boy sometimes, especially when I go out and buy a similar coin inspired by the post....

I always enjoy seeing your coins Noob but know nothing about them unfortunately, I only own 1 medieval coin and I acquired that by accident. You don't need smoke blowers to know your coins are appreciated, keep em coming

I have some spanish medieval coins but... They came by "accident", usually as part of bigger lots. Iīm not interested in them, why? I donīt know, perhaps their "crude" style after seeing roman coins, the difficult reading of their legends... In Medieval Europe there was HUNDREDS of small countries that issued coins, you simply canīt afford to collect all of them (In Spain, counting the arab "taifas states", we have more than 50). I must confess that I donīt pay much attention to the medieval coinage of others countries, sorry. Is your coin beautiful? Yes, of course! Is your coin interesting? Yes, of course! Do I know anything about your coin? Nothing at all So... What can I say about it? "Oh, what a nice coin!", "marvellous", "great"... I canīt increase the information about the coin so... I keep silence, but Iīm ALWAYS ready to LEARN about your coin, his history, the circunstances of his issue... All you can teach us about your coin is always welcome so I must say: Thanks for posting it!

Athabert - Wonderful response. I would like to add a Reale of Isabella and Ferdinand to my collection. Its on my list, as well as stuff from the Reconquista. I picked up this Mowahhid Almohad dirham that was traded through out Iberia and North Africa. Almohad Caliphate (Muwahid) Islamic Iberia and North Africa AR Dirham AH 524- 640 (AD 1156- 1272) 13.8 mm x 14.0 mm, 1.40 grams

Yes and no... I must explain myself, these coins were coined by almorads as you says, but was imitated (falsified) by several towns on the southern coast of France, Spain, Italy... The reason? In those times silver was overpreciated in northern Africa so if you was going to trade with the moors it was useful to carry silver. This was step 1.(carrying silver as bullion). But when you arrived to Tunisia, Argel or other city you must pay a tax to change your silver for coins; step two was to carry falsified silver coins to trade (the tax for coining your silver was lower in Europe). Finally, step three was to debase the silver of your silver fake coins to save money... So... You cannot be sure, your "islamic" coins could be made in an european city as Barcelona, Marseille, Toulon...

athalbert, I was trying to figure out if my coin or AN's was one of the "millares" ...i didn't think so but was not certain. I was going by this guys page.. http://coins.alif.fr/Muwahhid/Muwahhid.htmlit seems like they are a bit larger and lighter, and tend to have the name of mohammad misspelled.

The map is wrong, they never conquered till France, they stopped at Toledo, The kingdom of Aragon was never conquered by them. The "millares" were struck in a lot of cristian mints, in several occasion so accurately that is impossible to identify one of these coins without a metallographic study, but others they committed mistakes...

I just received an AR Millaresa Christian imitation of the Almohad dirham. The coin has a much lower weight and a much larger flan. I made scaled photo of the two types, in hopes of settling the NM,ND confusion of the two types. The Millaresa is 19 mm x 20 mm x 1.17 grams
