Wow, thanks so much for the help and advice. I will wait and see how high the Nerva goes. When I was researching Nerva I did see one with the clasped hands reverse- a very interesting looking coin. Thanks for the heads up on the Trajan. I will try to take my time and enjoy the process.

I'd hold onto my $30 and save up another $30 for a much nicer example than this one. Too many scratches.

Ancient coin collecting is a new world full of surprises and amazing stories... sometimes you can follow the career of an engraver through several emperors, other you can see a reverse coined by an emperor used by the rival emperor who killed him... Game of thrones! (but without Daneeris and dragons, sorry...)

We all have different budgets. I would skip this coin, it is mediocre. Now showing you gold coins is evil, as you properly are not going to budget for them. However, this one is poor quality.I saw some on v-coins for 50-60 that were superior. I stand by my belief, and the statements told to me from ebay sellers, that they sell all the mediocre coins via ebay. Now if that is your budget, I understand but I avoid them. Truly if you have a nice coin, worth a lot you go to CNG or somewhere else. I must confess I once acquired a Hostilian for 250 on ebay, sold it for 600 later on. So sometimes you can win.

To Caesar77: I have shown these two aurei only to show better the similarities between the obverse portraits of Nerva and Trajan. These two images are taken from "ACSEARCH", I donīt have gold coins in my collection (I cannot afford them) and of course I wasnīt pretending "to be evil". Iīm using a foreign language to express elaborate concepts, sometimes I suppose that one sentence is going to be taken in one sense and unfortunately is understood in another sense. I never try to criticise, to humiliate or to discourage to anyone. I usually buy my coins in small markets where I can use what I have learned about Ancient Coins to get bargains from sellers that think that "studying about coins is wasting your time". Years ago, I tried to explain something about the coins that I picked up... ...only to see how they asked me 5 euros for the same coins that they were asking 1!

Tongue in cheek my friend. I did not mean "evil" literally. It just was such a dire contrast between a mediocre coin and a superlative one. Please don't take all those negative connotations to heart, I know you only have the best of intentions.

Donīt worry Caesar, as I has said sometimes is difficult to avoid confusions and mistakes when you are writing your own language, itīs mor difficult to comunicate when you canīt see the face of the person you are "talking" to. An ironic commentary sometimes can be interpreted as an offensive one, my "animus" (intention) was to apologize if someone felt offended or simply bad with my comment.

Great posts all around here, in particular both Athalbert and Caesar77.
What subject matter do you teach Athalbert?

The winning bid was U.S$40. If I was able to see such a coin in hand, I would seriously consider to buy it at the price. I don't have a coin of Nerva in my collection, and I guess that would have been one of the motivators.

BuckeyeCoinGuy said: What subject matter do you teach Athalbert? Iīm teacher of nothing, really Iīm Officer of the Spanish Armada but history was always my passion. I started to collect coins when my grandfatherīs foreman gave me some coins that he had found walking in our ranch (One spanish 2 pesetas 1.869 silver coin, trhee Late empire bronze coins, several bronze coins...). In those days I started to "excavate" with my cousins looking for archeological surveys and one day I found broken pieces of "fine pottery"... ...I understood what were really those pieces of "fine pottery" when digging I reached the teeth. Our mothers never allowed us to return there... ...but of course I did!
