Quote: Keep them for what reason? People probably save 2009 cents for the same reason people saved 1909 cents. There is no major difference between either year: both changed the way the cent looked the previous year, and both were still worth a penny years later.

@stonecoldearl
2009 coins have the lowest mintages since the 1950's and the 2009 penny has 4 different designs

Back when they came out, I hoarded over 400 of them I found in CWR. Never did find a LP4 until later on in 2010.

I've still only found one of the 2009-P LP4. It was in terrible shape too so I didn't keep it. That's after searching 15-20 boxes too!

I have unopened boxes of all of these issues. I went through three boxes and found a lot of doubled dies in one. About 50% of the box was doubled dies or one die or anther but mostly split between two that are nice one of which is really nice. One day I may go through the other boxes or leave them to my daughter as they aught to be in demand from marketers like Littleton Stamp and Coin.

Quote: A certain level of eye appeal is needed. A nicely toned coin gets saved but an ugly finger print gets tossed back. Agreed. No need to keep the bad ones, especially those with zinc rot.

I only keep them if they are full red unc. coins. I also keep proofs if I find them.

I've never gotten around to hunting yet (I want to start) but I've always tossed my 2009s back into circulation. However, reading this thread, I have changed my mind. If it ever becomes worth more than a cent maybe my great-great-grandkids will have a jar full.

I pull the formative years design and search for those fingers, then the rejects get tossed in the bucket of spending change and eventually taken to the bank, wound up with far too many pennies just keeping all the 2009s, in many cases I was finding more of those than I was wheats and Canadian cents combined!

I go through a lot of cents and I don't see many of them at all. Lately I started keeping the ones I find.

I like them so keep them. I don't find a lot of them so it isn't a big issue money wise. It goes through my treasure chest to try to get future kids and grand kids interested in coin collecting.
