The set pictured here is the set in this auction http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scarce-RCM-...em2ee167f958. Is it not? The exact wording is "This is a Business Strike Set as Issued by the Mint - Not Proof-Like". So the seller's claim is clearly that this is not a PL set but it DID come this way from the mint. At least that's the way I read it. So I guess the question is, is that possible. One post above mentions that a variety of coins were used to make up the sets. Frankly looking at the above pictures, the coins look PL but I guess pictures can be deceiving at this distance. Edited by TheCoinHunter

5 cents in that set is a SF Near as far as I can tell.

There`s no standard value so I guess the value is what someone is willing to pay, so why not shoot high!

These 1953 sets are amongst the most misunderstood items that ever came from the RCM. First it is in an official RCM cellophane and card board holder. Second the coins are all mint state and not proof like in this pictured set. Third depending on what was available on the day these were assembled 0 to 6 coins could be anywhere from Pl to out of the mint hopper regular coinage for circulation. Also the coins could be either high relief NSF or Low relief SF coins. Tread carefully as sellers ALWAYS think they are way better than what they are. Personally I have handled many of these and NOT one set has ever been all PL coins. MOST of these are usually all 6 business strike coins. Buy with absolute scepticism and NEVER pay huge money. Most I have paid well under 125.00 and only one set I ever paid more than 400.00 for and it had a PL 5 cents , PL 10 cents and an absolute choice MS 65 SF dollar and 50 cents. Careful purchase absolutely necessary! |

Hasn't this set been opened? Or did the mint use that cheesy looking tape? The coins look ok but I'd be suspicious about whether it's the original set.

That's what they look like from 1953-1960. It was a far simpler world back then. The RCM was selling you some coins and not fancy packaging. The end of the cello almost always lifted and you had a couple of choices. One you took the coins out and bought a super nice Capital Plastics holder and put them in that. Or you left the coins in the cello and simply taped the end. There is nothing nefarious about the OP pictured set. Today it is very rare to find an original intact unplayed with set in the original mint packing ,with fully intact bright cello. That said even when one is encountered there is not a huge premium. I would tell any collector interested in these sets to use their numismatic savvy and wait patiently until a choice set comes along at a price you are comfortable with. There are opportunities out there. Another important fact...........a huge amount of the mint sets have been broken up to acquire heavy cameo and ultra heavy cameo pieces for certification and registry sets. |

Thanks for the info, having never seen one in person I figured both ends would be sealed. "Original intact unplayed with set" would be hard to claim on this one, but is there really any added value anyway? Whenever I've wanted a "set" I've just purchased them exactly as aardspeed describes above.

I agree with Pacificoin all of these sets that I have come across have been mint state coins in them with no proof like coins in these sets be careful when purchasing these
