Awesome example of a lesser known but strikingly awesome DDO cent!

jdiablo30, Back in those days there were no scanners and no Photoshop. Most images that got published were in Black & White and without the software we have today, some colors got washed out and could not be reproduced effectively in the B&W media. Thus you shot everything in B&W. That was the standard back then. Once scanners and software that could effectively convert color to B&W came along, most of us started using color. I think I was one of the first of the numismatic writers to switch to color at the urging of Dave Harper at Numismatic News who suggested there may be a time they'd want to use it. Now NN does 95% of my articles in color. However, in some ways, many B&W images were sharper.

Quote:Nice example of that DDO for that year I've ever seen. Coop, I like the fact that it is a nice sharp EDS (or as close to it as you can get). Here is one I handled years ago in VLDS. No comparison!

I've always enjoyed the EDS examples more than the later die states of varieties. Sometimes on class 2 doubled dies, they disappear on the outside edge of outer devices.

Whatsamatter Coop? You don't like the late die state images? To be honest, I think the B&W looked better. I tried colorizing them and used them as such in Numismatic News but I somehow came back around to the B&W.

I've always preferred monochromatic images for detail images anyway. Makes evaluation of the actual features easier. Of course, nowadays we've got guys like rmpsrpms who is doing them in full color and 3D to boot.

SsDs, Even when I take color and convert it to B&W for my ads in the print media, I'm always amazed at how much more you can see.

Coop, not picking on you but have you ever tried sepia tone? That might really look cool.

That's one very nice penny Koinpro. I bought a bag of wheats yesterday. You can bet I'll keep a keen eye out for that one.

CoinMaster, Did you find any? I once found one in Good condition where most of the doubling was flat so it put it back in the dealers stock and told him what I did. He took it out and sold it for $25. I felt like a fool!
Also, I knew a dealer that took very worn regular 1917 cents and sold them as the doubled die. He said he never got a return! Sad!

I have found 3 of these in the past year. Wish they looked as good as this one.

The fist dealer you mentioned was a lot smarter than the second. The bag I got was one pound, there was only one 1917 in it. It wasn't a DD, but if it were that easy, it wouldn't be as good. I did get the 47-S and the 56 I recently posted though. I also picked a 1941 that I'm going to post shortly; it's not as nice as the other two, but certainy different.
