There is no point to reasoning with the unreasonable. This is the exact reason, as intended for ebay to step in.

Agreed that arguing isn't going to get me anywhere here.

On the return detail page, it shows the item status as still in transit, and the tracking hasn't updated since the package left the US 4 days ago. I don't see any option on that page to open a case with ebay.

If you return the coin with tracking showing that it was returned it's probably not going to matter to ebay what you returned.

Keep the case open with ebay and you will most likely get your refund.

It looks to me like the seller really does believe you returned the wrong coin, even if you know it was the one sent to you.

As much as some folks scream about how bad ebay is, this is a good example of why buyers trust ebay so much.

Go to:

http://resolutioncenter.ebay.com/

Click the option that says 'I received an item that doesn't match description'

Kefiroth - It's good advice to persist in the Resolution Center. If your feedback is strong, you will probably win the case.

Thanks for the advice, all.

I think I'm going to wait for a day or two to see if the tracking finally updates (I sure hope it does). I don't think ebay will help me if my return doesn't even show as having been delivered.

He's not being unreasonable, hes trying to con ebay. He's getting ebay to pay him for it so he can triple his money when he sells it again. PERIOD... to ebay it's a "he said / she said" situation. They will refund both parties money. You're not out a dime but it will be in your internal history with them. He dosent care about you and he knew his game plan when he sent it to you on eat he was going to do depending on what you say when you receive it

Yeah, once the seller gets to that point, there's only one option. Just open a case with ebay, and they will refund you. You returned the coin, so you'll get your money back. I would probably let the seller know what you are going to do, sometimes they come around with the threat of a case, and negative feedback.

Update...sort of.

Now more than 5 days after the seller acknowledged the arrival of my return, the tracking still says that it is in transit (no updates since it left US soil). As such, ebay will not allow me to pursue any sort of further action through their website, as "a return has already been initiated for that item". Apparently, the process cannot continue until delivery has been confirmed by the tracking number, and it looks like that is never going to happen (again, despite the seller having acknowledged receipt of my package).

Seems like I'm pretty much screwed here.

A sad reason why I just don't do out of U.S. purchases, or sales.

It might be worth giving ebay a call. I had a situation with a seller and ultimately got ahold of a real live person who issued a refund.

If you call up and talk to someone at ebay about this problem you can just show them the message the seller sent you stating he received the return. That is really fortunate you got that in writing. That should be enough to get the case decided in your favor.

Update!

After several days, ebay finally allowed me to escalate the case to customer service through the website. I explained the situation already laid out in this topic, and here is the response I received:

Quote:
Hello,

Thank you for contacting ebay Customer Service regarding the UNC 1900 Victoria OH Shilling you purchased from [redacted]. I'm sorry to hear that you have encountered a problem with this transaction and I understand that the seller claimed he item you returned to them was a different coin. Rest assured that I am genuinely interested in resloving this issue for you.

To begin with, we have reviewed the account's activity and we have seen that you're a member since 2011 and we appreciate that we are your online market place of choice. I would also like to commend you for your time and effort in bringing this matter to our knowledge.

I know what an inconvenience that is for you to receive an item which is not as described and we appreciate you taking the time to do so. After reviewing your case including your communication with the seller, I can see here that the seller confirmed they received an item. With this in mind, I'm pleased to inform you that I have decided to close the case in your favor.

Please be informed that you will receive a full refund within 24 hours to the PayPal account you used to purchase the item. Should there be any delays, rest assured that you will receive your refund. Expect that you will receive an automatic email from PayPal to notify you that funds have been received.

To make sure your transactions will go smoothly in the future, we suggest you visit the ebay site and click the Safety Centre link located at the bottom of any page. There you will find tips on how to buy safely in the "Buying Safely" section.

I trust that I have reviewed this case thoroughly and made this decision in good faith for we value the essence of fair judgement.

Kind regards,

Florena C.
