Looks like Machine Doubling, or a different form of "fake" doubling. Only worth 1 cent IMHO. |

If figures. I guess I will know a real DDO when I see one. I am NOT giving up. Also, last night I found Coppercoins site and also Lincoln Cent resource to refer to. I thought the coin was possibly 1987 D/D rpm 3, but I took a better pic, and it looks like the same 'fake" doubling. Oh well. Thanks all for your comments! Much appreciated:) |

CountryCharm, You have me a bit confused.Your title reads DDO;doubled die obverse.Then here you are saying: 1987 D/D rpm 3.  The link I put was to my coin,a DDO not an RPM. John1  |

Sorry to confuse John1! I am still learning all the terminology. After I posted last night, I did some more research on rare 1987 D cents and thought it might be the 1987 D/D rpm 3 instead. But I took another pic and determined it was NOT an RPM, but more fake doubling. I appreciate you providing the link. I think you were right in that the coin is not a DDO. I think it is worth 1 cent:( |

I know it is hard to not get discouraged, but understand, DDO and DDR are rare. That is why they carry a premium higher than 1¢. My suggestion is to go onto ebay and buy a couple of inexpensive, yet noticeable examples from a reputable dealer or two. Find you a seller specializing in die varieties. One of my favorite dealers is Chugly1909. Also John Wexler still sells online from time to time. Get you a few good examples, and study them. If you study enough the features that make a true doubled die will jump out at you, and make it much easier to spot in the wild. |

Thank you for your words of encouragement seal006. I thought about buying some examples actually. In fact I recently joined a coin auction group on FB and watched a very nice 1995 DDO be sold for $45. I think those facebook auctions drive the prices up though. Great if you are a seller. I found your recommended seller, Chugly1909 on ebay and am now following him. I also found John Wexlers site as well. Thanks seal006! Happy Hunting! CoinMasters, thank you! I purchased the United States coins 2015 Official Red Book. I was disappointed with it though because tons of rare cents are not listed and so I made my own chart. Also, I recently purchased the "Short List" from coppercoins, so maybe that will help with my searching as well. It took me many years to even crack open my mom's treasure chest of coins. Right now I'm just learning about the cents by collecting them myself. Later, I will move onto the silver. I'm determined to add to my moms collection and then later pass it on to my son. Hopefully I don't drive you all too crazy in the process! So far everyone has been immensely helpful and for that I am grateful. I've learned so much already, but there so much more to learn. |

The lower southeast side of the mint mark is split plating and zinc rot. Happened on a lot of 80's zincolns. Note on the 1987D-1MM-003 the spread on the RPM. You would know for sure if you had this dies coins:  Don't sweat having the wrong answer. You are not the only one who benefits from your questions. Also the know it when you find one is true. Then you realize you were looking too hard for something that wasn't there on all the other coins you've searched. Edited by coop

Your right coop, before I joined I read others posts and answers here on Coin Community and learned from them. I'm sure someone will benefit from my silly questions one day! Thanks for your info on the 1987 D 1MM-003. It will be great to refer back to in the future:)
