Several unused booklets from all periods of the program have been available in the collector marketplace for years. CU examples are easy to find.

As Lettow said, these and almost all of their relation are easy to find.
BUT - (and please pardon me if I go into another related field of tokens) many small stores and chains that accepted food stamps gave their change back in TOKENS useful only at that store.
So if you become interested in this field of collecting, it would make sense to look into the tokens, too.

Here are a couple from an earlier series. I'd like to know if a catalog exists for these.

"The 20.00 was never issued. Those on the market are reproductions of a proposed design." Here is an image of that unreleased $20. The Banknote Corp. of America was a spin-off, created when International Bank Note merged with U.S. Bank Note Corp., effectively creating a U.S. monopoly. BCA was sold to a French interest as a way to create "competition" in the U.S. market and avoid anti-trust litigation. But the food stamp contract still went to US Banknote.

I found a few unused books when sorting through my late Brothers belongings in 2008...

Raising this zombie thread from the dead to add an image of a ten dollar food stamp I rediscovered in a drawer. I knew I had one but couldn't find it when I originally posted this. Series 1997 B $10 It has a stain in the portrait area however it is the only one saved from the redemption pile. Guess I did not save a $5 food stamp.

That's a nice addition to the thread. I have never seen these anywhere before. There must have been millions printed and somehow they all eluded me.

I know my mother redeemed them every so often otherwise it was lost revenue. When the paper coupons were being phased out she turned in a large quantity she had on hand and these were a few stragglers that were saved and/or overlooked.

This one is not mine, but I thought it would be of interest to the thread. This is a replacement (star) food coupon -- only the second one I have ever seen. These would have been used to replace printing errors as inspectors found them. Given how many food stamps were printed there ought to be many more of these, but no one was looking for them at the time so they flew under the radar. Only now that ebay has reversed the sales limitation on these are they starting to gain collector interest. I suspect more will slowly creep out of the woodwork.

Wow! A star note. Now -- start searching for that radar! Thanks for posting that one. I never saw these before. I did pick up a ration book at a show. Showed it to my mother and she got a kick out of seeing it.

The thing I like about these is that there are only six designs in the entire series, so completing a type set is relatively easy and not too expensive. And if you want to specialize, there are many different series years to collect. Here's a complete set (not mine, though I'm working on one).

I just picked up two of the 50 cent ones because I am a sucker for engraving (I am offering the spare for sale). Seems like the prices vary quite a bit! Interesting that they were illegal to sell for a while. Makes total sense!

We babysat for a neighbor back in the late 80's and they paid us with a $5 one. Have no idea what happened to it, as we couldn't use it.
