My bank has a coin counting machine (I got the rolls there) where you dump the coins yourself. Is that ok then because then the tellers don't have extra work. The bank is a Wells Fargo.

Do not dump the coins at the same bank you got them. It is bad form and you risk getting your dump coins back the next time you get rolls.

What is the best items you have found at your credit union? And if you search for copper how good are your returns? because I go to M&T and I search penny boxes for copper and 20-25 percent of the pennies are copper.

Coinstar is great if you use one that offers gift cards you can use.

For pennies Coinstar is by far your best option. You don't have to deal with anyone and you can get an Amazon gift card with 0% fees. You can apply the credit to your account right away so no one else can try and guess the code and steal your gift card. I don't think they ever expire either. I have read where coin counters such as coin star will rip you off by counting the wrong totals however I have never tested that theory.

I notice that more and more banks are only accepting rolled coins and no longer offer a counting machine as an option.

That is interesting Coinfrog (and idk if I had mentioned it here or another site) but every bank I have ever had doesn't accept rolled coin they have to be run through the counter due to people using washers in place of the coins

Every grocery store in my area has a Coinstar and they all offer gift cards for the store they are in. It has actually come in handy a few times.

jbuck, those stores charge you the 10.8% fee for counting when you use the money in that store. only worth it for pennies in small numbers. If you have a grocer somewhere that has 0% fee for using the coins counted at the same store, then I am moving where you live!

I roll them and spend them, or spend them unrolled. If I have a box of halves and want another and haven't finished spending the box I have, then the odds of me getting the bx back are 0%.

if it is a lot of Zilcolns you have left after searching, you could always superglue them to a table and get some clear acrylic resin to coat and seal them and watch them rot over time without having the mess to clean up later.

Gift cards have no fee. I put $10 in, I get a $10 card. There is a fee if I want to cash that card, but I am not sure what it is since I am already in that store to shop.

My bank (BoA) doesn't even accept rolled coins now, and haven't for years. They give you a big, heavy-duty plastic bag and you dump all your coins in them, seal it up, and then they send it to a regional facility for counting. About 10 years ago before I had even heard of CRH, I spent hours in front of the TV rolling up my change from the past 5 years only to have them hand me the bag, point be to the couch in the lobby and tell me to break 'em all open. Bah!
