I'm in at au 50. Looks like luster is there but holding it back from higher grade.

Could be the photo but the lines in the upper hemisphere of the Obv look completely flat in some points of the shield. (Could be grease, hard to say without having in hand).
Obv VF35, Rev XF45 Net XF40

XF45. Like almost all Shields it is weakly struck with major die cracks and weakness in the shield lines. Coins that were struck well enough to have full shield lines usually have even worse die cracks. I love the die metal spikes in the inside lower loop of the 5.

It looks like it could be a large Retained Cud running from 11:00 to 1:00 on the obverse as well. I'm at EF45. |

Well guys hopefully icg wasn't to far off !!
I will try and get some better photos once it arrives ...

I put 42 and some change in to it ...
Was that a bad buy ? Like I said this is the first one I've purchased !

unfortunately its an ICG coin you have to knock a couple grade points off
its not a bad purchase for the price

Guess I'm too critical with Shield nickels; I was thinking EF-40 was generous. Star radials are mostly absent but apparently that is due entirely to strike. Surfaces look slightly granular. There is a small rim dent or defect at 1:00 on the obverse; perhaps this is a tiny clip? As long as you are happy with the quality and the price it's all good. |

Hopefully all the shield lines are there, and the blurriness is on the holder. Not a bad buy.

Well guys I went and looked at a few Ngc coins of the same date and grade before the auction had ended , now you guys may be right but to me the AU 53 ngc coins looked about the same that's why I went ahead and bid .. So I don't know , hopefully when I get it in hand I will be able to tell a bit more ... After comparing this coin to au50-53 coins of the other company's I was almost positive this was a solid au50. I'm not that familiar with these so again I could be wrong .. RedBook has this date au50 at 110 and the au53 coins listed as BIN on ebay are in the 120+ range , now I understand this does not mean that's the value of my coin but seeing that made me feel like if it indeed was at least AU 50 then 42 was a good price !! Unfortunately you guys have me worried a bit now , I guess I could check out photo grade and look at a few more AU pcgs and ngc coins once I have the icg coin in hand ... I'm sure I can get my 42 bucks back out of it , I need it to be at least au50 for me to keep it .. It's not that I don't like the coin , I just really don't want a ef45 coin labeled as AU 53!! Thanks guys for posting Soon as it arrives I will put up a couple new photos and hopefully change some minds ... Lol |

Here's the ngc coins I was going by before I purchased the icg coin , even after taking several more looks I'm just not seeing much if any difference .. Please don't take this the wrong way guys I appreciate everyone's input and those that say EF 45 may very well be right ... I just wanted to show you guys what I was going by and maybe someone can tell me what I'm missing ... So the first two are ngc au53 The third coin is my icg au53 Finally the forth is ngc au50 I'm just not seeing much difference here ,other than the 45 coins have really no luster at all ... Now the 50 coins have traces that still show and the 53 has a bit more ...         |

Certainly looks like the ICG grading is consistent with NGC's judgments. I wonder whether the typical 1868 has this level of strike weakness. Or, is it normal for the entire series? I've only got 2 Shield nickels and both are MS. I'll pull them out of the SDB soon and take a closer look. |
