Look into a Danco 7070 Tupe Set album.

I think he means date set of some denomination, not type set (different by design or metal, not by date).

Ah light dawns...

Type set can have several different meanings, but the most common would be a single example of each denomination or series of coin regardless of date. People will take a year or a range of years or even a century.

It doesn't really seem to be what you are talking about.

Rather it seems like you're trying to do a set of a single type of coin such as my $0.03 silver collection or a collection of gold quarter eagles. If that's what you're after great just understand that by putting the word type in there you are confusing people.

Back to your Quarter Eagles set - instead of trying to collect every date and mint mark combination what about just doing the year or trying to get one nice example for each mint regardless of year.

That might make a very cool set, although a little pricey. I do not have my reference books in front of me ( I'm on the hamster wheel) but my memory says that that's one of the few coins that was minted in both Dalonega Georgia and Denver Colorado.

Oh. So you're looking to do a set of some oddball type. Large cents in the VG-F-VF range are always a good idea. 3-cent pieces can be had fairly readily, as with Two Cents.

A quarter eagle from each mint sounds like a good idea. There's someone on this forum who did that, bt with half eagles instead.

I apologize if I've confused anyone. I'm just getting back into collecting now that I have some extra money. Thank you for the information though. I'll look around on different sites to see if there is a set I can work on for a reasonable price.

EDIT: Thread title changed to avoid further confusion.

Cool.

Then you have to decide what YOU like.

If you enjoy holding 200 year old Half Cents that were worth real goods in exchange in the early days of our country, then collect them. If you just see endless nitpicking over tiny details on ulgy brown blobs, then don't do it.

I was doing a circulated typeset (coins in circulation as of 8:11am Central Time on 11Feb1861) and fell in love with the 3c silver so I detoured into those for a couple years.

GR58, That looks like a really cool set to put together, however I want to stick to one denomination of coins for now. I may possibly do something like that in the future, though.

After looking on various sites, I think I'm going to go with a Gold Quarter Eagle set from the Philadelphia mint in AU-55 to MS-60. I really like the recessed design of this series is why I picked it.

Started with a dime set back in the day, can be quite fun. Started with Capped Bust ended with clad. I just followed the Red Book.

Quick update. After bidding on multiple Indian Head Quarter Eagles and them going well over what NGC/PCGS have listed on their websites, I doubt I'll get one from ebay. I don't live in an area where there are a lot of numismatic related stores are either, so I am abandoning that set for now and will work on a lower denomination set. Looking at Liberty Nickles at the moment since they are relatively cheap, or I may just go back to attempting to buy "junk" silver while the prices are still low.
