Here is your culprit:

On top of a very small mintage, I would wager that no more than 5% of 2009 nickels were allowed to circulate.

I have found two (both with a D mint mark, like the majority of U.S. coins I get). One I got through coin roll hunting, the other I got in change. I only kept the one I got in change though, because the other was in a very bad condition.

Thanks for the replies guys! I should consider myself lucky I found the three in one box. I also noticed I had about 5 or 6 P's from when I roll hunted about 5 years ago. I guess everyone is hoarding them for the time being, which means their price must be artificially inflated. I'm about to go through another box I'll be happy if I get at least 3 again. :D

I've found 4 after a few boxes. 3d's and 1p. Not bad and glad I filled those holes.

Because of recession, most Federal Branches have excess of coins so they don't order new coins from US mint. By the middle of 2010, nickels minted in 2009 started to show up in a few cities. A few lucky CRHers noticed this phenomenon and took advantage of it. They bought boxes from the bank and resold on ebay as rolls or boxes. So most of 2009 nickels are still lay in people garage. I was lucky to have my hands on a few boxes of 2009D nickels and I sold them all except two rolls.

I have seen a good number of PR and DC quarters, but almost none of the others.

You can find the pennies cents and quarters from '09 easier than you can the nickels and dimes.
