Mr Click- Only the first person is a Native American. The person in the rear is a "voyageur" (an agent or fur trader), hence the nickname of these as Voyageur Silver Dollars.

What ever your using to defuse the light is casting an unnatural pink tone. I believe that under a direct light the chatter on both coins would show stronger. I'm only trying to give constructive criticism, your doing a great job, and I'm not even close to an expert.

Thank to all for there comments it's very much appreciated. qbvbsite, the light used was fluorescent ring light as shown in the photo below. Coin Scavenger I never used anything to defuse the light but you can see from the picture supplied the source of light I had used. The coin pictured in the OP was taken inside a capital holder and I'm wondering if it's the light traveling through the plastic that may have given it that tint. I probably tried one of the hardest coins to photograph in picking a large silver dollar as I've always had difficulty getting good shots of them. With that said I think I'll try removing the coin from the holder. In hand this is a really nice coin there's no chatter at all and I'm not sure if it's a proof-like or not. It does have a excellent cameo on both sides. Hi John1, that's a great idea and yes I've looked on ebay for one and they are available but I'm holding off on buying for now. I'm hoping and expecting that when I learn all the ins & outs of the camera I should be able to take better pictures with this camera then with my old one.

Do you mind sharing what type of camera you are using? Those are nice photos for a first attempt. I am finding it a bit of a challenge to get the lighting correct when taking pictures of coins. Anybody have any suggestions?

Quote: I wonder if those Indians were hauling coins for Loomis? Nope not for Loomis - If you see the little HB on the package in the canoe it indicates that they were working for the "Hudson Bay" company

Canada67, I thank you for your kind words. The camera a bought was a Nikon coolpix P610, it's what they call a bridge camera it has auto focus or manual. These were taken with Auto focus.
Cheers, Bill

Lambcolin I'm not sure what you mean by your question. Are you referring to the camera?

Very nice photos Bill! The color seems just off a bit maybe you should try taking a few photos through a glass to defuse the color! Give it a try...

The focal length was 18.8 mm for these pictures. Info on the picture is ISO 360, focal length 18.8 mm, exposure compensation 0-EV, Aperture f/4.8 and shutter speed i/60. Below is from the manual but it still doesn't mean much to me, I'm still just using the auto focus. Could that even be correct that you can focus on manual from 1 cm away. Focus range; [W]: Approx. 50 cm (1 ft 8 in.) to infinity [T]: Approx. 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in.) to infinity Macro close-up mode: Approx. 1 cm (0.4 in.) to infinity (wide-angle position) (All distances measured from center of front surface of lens)

Yes Macro mode would enable you to take perfect pictures of individual letters or features----just like a microscope. Have fun!
