My 1838 Half Dime is being shipped to NCS tomorrow. I'm hoping they will be able to conserve it, get rid of those spots and it will end up in a problem-free holder.

It looks like the coin has been received by NCS. I would guess that this means they are going to work on conserving it?
My shipment arrived at NGC ten days ago.
The other coins I submitted are all in the "Quality Control" stage of grading.

It moved on to "Quality Control" today.

It got an AU Details grade from NGC. I don't know if they tried to clean it or not.

I just received my invoice and it doesn't look like NCS attempted to work on the coin, they just slabbed it as an "AU Details" coin.

They must have seen something that told them the spots were not able to be removed safely.

I got the coin back today. It turns out NCS did work on the coin and removed most of the black spots, but they still gave it an "Improperly Cleaned" grade.
I hope my acetone soak didn't cause that!
I'll post photos later.

Acetone shouldn't cause it to look cleaned, but depends on how you dried it. If you rubbed with a cloth it might have left hair lines.

No cloth and I let it air dry. Perhaps someone else had previously tried to work on it. Here are the photos so you can see what NCS did to remove the spots. I thought there was a good chance it would get a "Details" grade, but thought it might has a shot at "Uncirculated Details".

I just noticed there's a rim Cud that stars below star 13 and continues under the date. -MV

Perhaps inquire as to when they think it was improperly cleaned or what did they see to give it that call?

It sure looks a lot nicer. I don't know why it got details without looking at it in hand. I don't see any signs of cleaning.
I don't see this one being UNC, particularly because there is evident wear in the fields denoted by the luster breaks.

The luster breaks in the fields weren't noticeable before I sent the coin in. I'd guess that in removing the spots they became more visible.
