It was a gift I got years ago that was purchased on ebay. The coin does not stick to a magnet and weighs in at 6.16g. It's silver in color all around (no other metal showing through) and does have the nice ring to it. What are the Weight Tolerances associated with the seated liberty and could wear account for the additional difference?

although the base of the "2" is a bit larger than most and the coin is very soft looking, which could by all accounts just be chalked up to overdipping/cleaning, it may not be a fake. more to come...

The weirdness above the head matches 100% with the no no site coin. So does the weird 2. The motto looks comically bad.

Quote: The coin does not stick to a magnet and weighs in at 6.16g. That's all we need to know. A genuine specimen should weigh approximately 6.68g. Your's is way too far out of tolerance. Fake.

By 1882, quarters were at the 6.25g spec, so 6.16g is in the range. It could be a real coin that's been heavily dipped or eroded by seawater. But I still don't like that 2. Here's another real one. http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-quar...bnail-071515After being whizzed it looks about like the one you have for details...but still that problem with the 2. Even with the abuse you still have a $300-400 details coin - if it's real. Send it to ANACS and find out for sure.

I forgot about the weight changes in 1853 and 1873. Before that, I was giving plausibility to a metal detecting find.

it's possible. Quote: Here are the five types being sold on the no-no site:
The vertical lines in the shield 5/6 is correct. At the no-no site it is on the 7/8 using the right side of the 1 and going straight up. The date is also correct- slopes from left to right. I just got an email back from the foremost expert on liberty Seated quarters in the known universe and he took a look at the OPs coin and declared: "An obvious fake to me...typical China product" For me, mystery solved.

Maybe I will send it off sometime for verification for an in-hand analysis. What is no-no site? Is that ebay? If I send it in and it's fake, do they confiscate it? Even if it's fake it's still a nice whole filler in my opinion.

I would send it back to where you got it for a refund.

Thanks Desfreeworld for the follow up. Did he say anything as to why they would have used silver and the 1 to vertical shield line being moved compared to the other fakes?

This kind of opinion will destroy the hobby. A nice hole filler is a decent AG3 not the supporting of mass cast counterfeits. I don't even buy coins anymore unless its from an extremely well respected resource of the Numismatic community. I am simply blown away by how deep the market has been penetrated by this scourge. Sickening. Quote:
What is no-no site? The site we do not speak of. It's not The Bay. It is the site that your coin was born from before it was gifted to you via the bay years back. How many years ago did you receive this?
