Looks polished not proof. I see no contrast at all between the fields and the devices, they kind of just run together, at least in the photos.

Here are a few more pics.

There is wear on the coin, that is why it is obvious that it is circulated.

I have compared it to my other Morgans MS 66 on down, and the shine on this coin is significantly greater.

I did notice the shine on the detail, and that is what makes me think polished. However the field has the same shine right up to the edge of the detail. There is no polishing "halo" at the edges of the detail like I have seen on other polished coins. The reverse however does show the difference in luster.

Maybe its a Proof gone circulated that got polished.

Here are the pics, sorry I can't get a good picture of the finish.

Here's a better picture of the Reverse
Just kidding.

This coin got me questioning if it were a DMPL.
The field (in person) looks like this(only with some scratches).
The Satin finish on the eagle is also very similar, only showing some wear.

That last pic is very nice....What are you calling "obvious wear"? There are several nics and bumps but I don't see obvious wear....Also, I don't see enough to call it polished. I don't know if I would call it Proof-like. Nice coin and don't sell it short...That's an MS grade coin.

The last Pic isn't my coin it was an example to show how My coin almost looks. I would love to have an 1883 CC in MS condition.

Sorry for the confusion. I noticed the fields on that coin and it looked similar to my coin.

NGiles,

As Bobby pointed out, your coin has been polished and is not DMPL.

If you look at the picture of your sample 'CC' reverse you note that the devices (lettering, eagle, wreath) are frosted in contrast to the mirror fields. On your example, the fields and devices have the same mirrors. Although this is more correctly defined as "cameo", the true unmolested Morgan PL's and DMPL's retain the frosted devices.

Thanks for the additional pics, I admit that in the earlier ones the Morgan did look just tooooo shiny but with the detail off I couldn't be sure what I was looking at. Interesting exercise.
May you get one to replace it at a decent price.

Good thing I didn't pay for a cameo. I got this for silver spot price. That's probably a good indication that you are right.

I agree 100% with bobby on the polished details. It looked too shinny. It probably is all polished, the thing that threw me off is that the cameo finish in the field doesn't have the hazy silohette around the edges of the details that I have seen on other polished coins. There is evidence in both directions, atleast enough to throw up a question mark in my mind. the pictures don't do it justice.

I just put it on the forum for conversation. Thanks for the great feedback.

Sorry I confused you. Cameo refers to the contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields. I think you meant to say "the mirror finish in the field ..." I think this one had a dip before it hit the buffer. That would eliminate the hazing on the edges you mentioned.

Don't worry I'll catch on to the terminology before too long. Feel free to confuse me further. The knowledge I've gained on the forums has far out weighed the confusion.

I can almost make people think I know what I'm talking about.

Uh Oh!

Here's something else you may not have known ... whenever you hit a milestone here you have to give something away ... it's the law! Go directly to Contests and giveaways.

I haven't heard of that rule yet. I guess I shouldn't proclaim a milestone for myself. It's not a real milestone anyway. I do have a highly polished coin I could maybe offer up as a prize.
