If the bank has a central cash, they won't likely know who made the error (until you report it), but if each teller has their own cash, this one would have been short, which they don't get financially penalized for, but it's not a good feeling. I agree that your Karma is best served by letting them know.

I'm assuming that they have a central cash for rolls because he had to leave to get the rolls.

I know what I would do ... I'd call the bank and let them know of their error and my willingness to make it right. Quote: but I made 120$ in profit. I'll take that anyday. Sounds to me like you were pleased with the result ... until a few of us chimed in. Do whatever allows you to sleep at night. David

I had the same kind of mishap. I asked for 7 CWR of Half Dollars and she gave me 3 Rolls of Small Dollars with the 4 rolls of Half Dollars. The next day I went back and gave them back

I agree with trout1105. The bank has to do a reconciliation on those quarters, and I'll bet you the teller would be remembered for the mistake.
Meanwhile, I'll bet that the teller would remember you too, and would feel obliged to tell the manager. The bank staff may be told on who the customer was who took the quarters. They will never ask for them back, but it is possible that you may never get any more coin rolls to hunt through.
Best thing you can do now is return them, and let them them know what has happened. That way, you may (hopefully), get more coin rolls to hunt through in the future.
Human error, everybody makes them. Best to put it right. Everybody will feel happier.

I actually had a very similar experience at the bank yesterday/ today. I was there on a Friday as I always am counting coins, but this time I decided to give them a break and I didn't look through all the rolls. The teller said that they had to open the rolls to be sure they are full and she went to the counter behind the windows (there are 2, 1 in the lobby and 1where the tellers are). When she came back, she was handing me cash for the coins counted. I was supposed to get $497.00 for the halves that I brought in but she gave me $270.00 more. Once I realized the mistake it was too late and the bank closed for the day. Today, on Saturday, I received ta phone call which woke me up and the person was telling that one of the tellers made a mistake. They checked the cameras and saw that she gave me more money and she was short and if I could come in and make everything right. Sure enough I went back to the bank and gave them back the difference.
Guess what I'm trying to tell is they have cameras that records every transaction. Do the right thing.

I agree......the teller will be short and at least get written up. At worse loose their job.
I would return them and make it right.

Yes. I wouldn't want to get him in unnecessary trouble.

UPDATE : I returned the rolls today. Talked to the bank manager and explained the situation. She seemed very surprised and pleased. She never asked who the teller was so hopefully nothing serious will happen to him.

I would return them myself ......especially if that's your regular bank and you recognize the tellers in the bank. If you return it, it will have them remember you and maybe they wouldn't be quick to dismiss you when you ask "Do you have any older coins back there?" Or maybe even tell the manager you collect coins and wonder if they have anything different back there? In the long run you may make out like a real bandit with the stuff they might come across!
