A 1950-D would be a very rare find in a box of nickels!

Laura, I've asked this before but nobody ever answers me. How many rolls of nickels are there in a box, and how much does it weight? I can barely heft a canvas mint bag with 20 rolls of nickels in it. (I am an old woman with a bad back and heart trouble.) I would love to order a box of nickels, but I'd never get it out of the bank, so why bother? How do you get it home? Jan

Jan -
50 rolls in a box, and I believe it's around 22 pounds.

Janknez, Hi! I too have a very bad back and I take my garndson's stroller with me (empty). No one questions a woman with an empty stroller. I just load up the coins and cover them up and out I go. Piece of cake! Gussyboy1 (Connie)

I'm glad you got the answer you needed. I was at lunch and away from my desk. I think the baby stroller thing is a great idea, surely someone from the bank could help get it from the stroller into your car for you, I would hope.
By the way, I just came across my first S nickel !! A 1969 S. Laura

I enjoy looking for really high quality examples. Jeffersons seem to get beat up real easy, so it's always a little bit of thrill to find a really choice 1986 or whatever. I only keep what I consider to be AU or better.

My suggestion would be to acquire a copy of the Red Book and watch for the ones listed with the lowest mintages. Usually, as already noted, try watching for the S mint coins too. Here is something most people miss. Reverse side errors. Ever notice in most books, web sites, coin shows, etc. most errors are on the fronts of coins. That is due to our laziness to just turn the coins over I suspect. With Jefferson nickels I've noticed over the years very, very few error coins on the face but the reverses I've found many errors. Mostly minor, but still errors. Note roll and bag searchers always look for datess and Mint marks and pass on error coins since they are going through numerous coins and don't have time for errors.
