I agree with 1 sickevo for the reasons he stated, the devices do not match the surfaces, it may be an old cleaning but a cleaning none the less.

Nice going Prethen!
I'm on the 'it's not cleaned' wagon on this one.

Wow! That is a RARE beauty. I would be a little nervous too, but the coin looks to be problem free from here. 3CN are definitely underrated. They really are beautiful and rare...usually an expensive combo.

I wish you luck Prethen. Please do tell us the result of your submission. Looks like Mr Merc and I vs everyone else :)

Raw, rare and on the 'bay worries me as well, but it is a series you are familiar with. The seller also states that he guarantees it's a business strike (in the Q&A section), I would make a copy of the ebay listing just in case there is a problem. Has this coin been cleaned? Hard to tell from the images, but the thought also crossed my mind as soon as I looked at the coin. I don't know. Good luck, Prethen!

I can see why someone would think the possibility of cleaning exists but I'd have to see that one in person to decide.

For those that think this "might" have been cleaned, I'd be curious to see images of 3CN coins in this grade that you feel do not look cleaned.

It has "the look" for a standard EF/AU 3CN and is a very nice coin. They normally do have flat grey surfaces with a little bit of crustiness around the devices. If this coin was silver and looked like that, I would probably think cleaned as well but that is the way they should look.
Any estimates on a surviving population?

For those that think this "might" have been cleaned, I'd be curious to see images of 3CN coins in this grade that you feel do not look cleaned. After looking through the Heritage auction archives at 1884 3CN coins in xf and lower I only found 1 that did not look cleaned (and it was only a vf-30)......in fact, many were in anacs holders and net graded for cleaning. Many of the no problem slabbed coins had the same look as the cleaned ones. Prethen, this is your series and if I were interested in purchasing one I would be asking for your advice on it. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

Any estimates on a surviving population?
PCGS pop is 25 coins, NGC pop is 20 coins in all grades. That's a total pop of only 45 coins between the 2 (no info on anacs), and I'm starting to see why Prethen was interested in a raw one on the 'bay.

That looks as nice, or nicer, than the ANACS VF30 which went for $1100 at Heritage last month. I remember the seller either from the PCGS or NGC boards, I forget which, but if it's a bad deal Prethen has an element of public disclosure which he wouldn't if it weren't a forum member.

I'll be the first to admit a bad deal if that's what it ends up. So far, after my discussion with the dealer and my initial thoughts, I'm cautiously optimistic the deal is a good one. I have a few specialists who are willing assist me in viewing hi-res scans (and maybe some edge photos) to help me determine if I was "lucky" or not.
