Hadley's right on. The only thing you'll notice from here on out is that lint. Swap it out...

I just spoke w/the mint rep. and I'm shipping it back OVERNIGHT AIR / insured !! They will replace it and also refund the shipping charge.
It's a crying shame that I was on the phone the first day of pre-sale for 3 hours to place this order and then finally get it today, and it looks like it never even went through inspection !! URGHHHHH!!

I just received a set of 2008 Proof Presidential dollars. For the most part they do look good, but I thought I saw a few imperfections. Didn't really have time to check them out - will have to get out my magnifying glass and check thoroughly.

I'd definetely send it back as well. If you notice it to start with, you'll always notice it. How bothersome.
I tend not to get the magnifying glass out with proofs. Unless the coin is worth a ton of cash, i'll look it over good and if I do not see anything, I probably never will and I leave it at that.

Did I make a mistake sending this coin back ? Someone thought it might be a "strike-through...and if so, do they command a premium ? (mine in particular)
Thanks, Laura

Hey, if this lint mark is struck into the coin, Keep it. All proof errors are rare. Value is subjective. If that is in fact struck into the metal, I would certainly keep it. It looks like the bird just munched a worm...Gusp

That is a lint mark. They may or may not be considered damage, and appear on only proof coins. This isn't an error, and it is very normal with proofs. If it's big and distracting, replace the coin, but since a piece of lint is bould to get stuck to the die during polishing, almost every proof coin will have a little lint. If the proof had a big fingerprint on it, that would a different story...
EDIT: No, it isn't a strike through.

Why would the mint unc be less likely to be messed up than the proof? Bobbi

I think he was saying that it would less likely show up b/c the proof is so shinny and shows everything where as the unc has the satin finish and covers up imperfections better!

I just picked up this thread. . . Yes that is a lint mark. As we were discussing in the other message thread, the QC and manufacturing standards are simply not up to par in recent years. I don't think it was a mistake to send it back, maybe you'll get a better replacement. It's just sad that the standards are so poor today. I have several coins in this recent shipment that bug me a little, but 3 pcs (out of 17) that are just not acceptable. In my business (electronic manufacturing) that would be an incredibly poor reject rate!
I see the same thing you're seeing. I'm a little surprised that the other thread where we were discussing this problem got so little attention! I've been collecting coins for more than 30 years and this is definitely a recently introduced problem (last 5 to 8 yrs?) and it is getting worse.

I feel that as the Mint creates more and more products, the quality is going to continue to decrease. Normal series, special series, commemoratives, and bullion; all in business, satin, and proof strikes. That is a lot of product to QC! Too many designs, with too many different standards; too much output with less spot checking.
IMHO, if the Mint would return to just making the normal six denominations in business and proof strikes, quality would improve.
