I teach elementary and middle-school band (grades 4-9) at a small private school in western Massachusetts.

If I'm lucky, I might spend as much as $300 in a year on coins. But my wages are meager compared to the cost of living in the area and once all my bills are paid, I have very little if anything left over. Add to this the occasional costly medical bill or car repair and it doesn't leave room for buying any cool coins.

I deal in the front end of printing.

I need to cut back on my spending now that I read the posts, hopefully to half of what I spend the last 2 years.

I told my daughter, "I'm retiring this year."

"From what?" she asked.

Perfect. I haven't 'worked' this century.

I try to keep my spending under $500 a month on collectibles, mostly money. I have been recently shifting some IRA savings to cold, hard, non-cash.

On another note, I just bought a beauty of a dangler from a UK military medal and the durn thing won't even fit in a 2 1/2 by 2 1/2. What to do, what to do?

Previous jobs, US Navy(electronics and data systems), IRS(they wouldn't let me near their mainframe), Peoples Republic of California(entomology and as assigned), Realtor(I relied on others to do their jobs, AAARGH!), and Hertz (brought the local office into the first steps of the electronic age).

I could write a book on why we have 12 months instead of 13...

Well, I head up a department of technical writers for a medical software company and my wife is a software developer for a different company, so I've been able to spend a decent amount each years on coins, paper money and bullion. Bullion is a special case, since we buy it purely as an investment and the amount we buy depends on the current cost and our estimates of future value. Coins and currency I try to keep between $5000-10000 per year in total expenditures.

This may all be changing soon, though, since my wife just found out today she is being laid off from her job. We're not too worried, since she has mad skills and should be able to find another job without too much problem. Plus, she worked at this company long enough that she gets both three month notice (while she trains her replacements) and something like 6 or 7 months worth of salary as severance. But still, nothing is certain and we'll have to see if there is any money in the budget next year for my hobby. If not, well, I guess I won't be buying that proof 20-cent piece I've had my eye on...

Airline ground support

Probably $500-1500 mainly to flip.
Like Conder101, working on building a fence, deck, and landscaping so coins have taken a backseat for now.

SQL developer for a third party energy supply company.
I buy and sell, so spend is not the correct word. I have purchased more than $26,000 in the last 12 months.

Im a contractor and do everything from wood floors and trim to siding and roofing, spackling and finish painting I do as well. Anyway I spend a good quality chunk of money on coins. Try to buy quality instead of quantity. If I had to guess in the last 4 months I've spent 5-6k on coins. Focusing my attention now on more gold.

Wow, there is a lot more technology people here than I would have guessed. I am one too.

Senior Information Technologist (fancy name for senior software developer)

Before marriage $2000.00 to $5000.00

After marriage < $1000.00

Edit: Just to clarify I do love my new wife and hunting for coins are not a priority in my life right now.

Student (got my bachelor's degree last year, trying and failing to finish my second of four semesters for a master's degree).

Used to get a stipend each month, an incredible $22 per month. Not anymore since I had to do a second try on one of my exams in my last semester.

Recently got an agreement with a money museum that they pay me 150 rubles ($2 and change) for every Numismatic News article by me they post (which should be almost every one I write, because they're really not sure where to get world coin news). Now if I could only get through my sheer laziness and start writing...

As for spending - $100 or so this June, and same in May (more details in this thread), but big spendings like that are not typical (normally I only spend $30 or so), and there are often long periods when I don't visit any coin shops at all. Definitely under $1000 per year; very possibly under $500 per year.
Unfortunately, I really can't bring myself to buy the more expensive coins (with the post-2014 exchange rates, anything above $5 or so needs to be extra extra special for me to buy it, which basically shuts me out of most silver... and anything above $2 just needs to be plain extra special, which still isn't very common), so I end up heavily on the "quantity" side of quality versus quantity. Which of course hampers my selling prospects significantly (not that I want to, but there are so many coins around that they're always in danger of being thrown away by my parents for taking too much space).

Will be officially retired on July 8th!

My budget varies month to month. Just what catches my eye. I'm guessing as I near my retirement date I might have to close my eyes a little more often

Also retired. I suppose my buying each month depends on my sales the previous month. My ebay income lately has been equal to or greater than my rental property income. The two combined roughly equal to my monthly 401k check.

Civil Engineer here.

My spending on coin varies from month to month but if it was averaged out it's probably around $500/year.
