Congrats. I took the shortcut and just collected the keys. My first 1909-S IHC was a counterfeit (and a good one, I must say) so all my keys are now certified, or in the process of getting certified.
The cleaned coin looks like MS70 to me. It matches the color of a couple of coins I experimented with. Try it on a proof copper... talk about crazy colors !

Becky said, "Here's a detail pic of the 77, just remember it's dark in hand, but you get blues and purples when it's tipped in the light, so I'm thinking MS70 maybe?"

Maybe I've been mistaken all along. I'm not aware of the "toning" of a coin being part of "grading" a coin. I would grade the 1877 you posted as F to VF.

I can see it has beautiful toning. Nice coin.

oops...posted prematurely....my resources say that for "Very Good," "Full rims are nearly always a requirement for this grade. A full rim means that you can see a line around the edge of the coin where it was raised up."

With the lack of a full rim and the wear on the feathers on the obverse, F to VF is very generous by grading standards.

Here, too, is an excerpt from one expert:

"MS70 is nearly perfect. No blemishes, good strike, great color, and a lot of other really nit picky stuff. Trust me, any coin you have that isn't slabbed isn't MS70. It's like winning the lottery twice. An average shiny new penny from the supermarket is MS63..."

j_h_s, MS70 is a soap used to clean coins. If used on copper it sometimes causes them to turn beautiful colors, mostly purple and blue. It was found that a leading IHC expert was treating his proof IHCs with MS70 causing them to tone, and then selling them for moon money.

I not in any way trying to say my coin was a MS70. But it did make me smile. Sorry for the confusion, I sometimes assume too much and forget there are new people who would not understand.

Hmmm... I wonder who that would be

Oh yes!! The sheer JOY of completing my IHC set was wonderful! Congradulations Becky. I have been concetrating on slowly upgrading over the last few years and that has been very exciting as well. I wish you the best of luck and I know personally how rewarding it can be, as there is nothing better than gazing at problem free IHC's.

Is MS70 worth getting? It looks like a pretty solid buy, especially in regards to getting the funk off of my IHC's.

Congratulations on your complete IHC collection. I completed my collection ('56-09s) a few years ago and have been upgrading since. There are a few that I won't be able to upgrade due to financial issues - like the 1856 and a few others. It was a fun collection to piece together and is one collection that you really get a feeling of accomplishment when completed. Now on to completing my next denomination (2 cent pieces).

Nice coins! I recently completed what I consider to be a very tough "sub-set" of the Indian Head cents, dating from 1866-1876. I'm still waiting to fill the 1877 and 1909 S holes in my sets!
