You paid through paypal, so paypal is going to take the money back from him. I wonder how long it will take before it appears again on ebay with your new bezel.

oh it won't, it will be in a SGS slab. the only reason it wasn't the first time is because the bezel was soldered closed

maybe I should solder the new one closed too.....you know, just to keep the memory alive? Honestly, I will be glad to send the coin back. It chaps my hide every time I look at the darn thing. I do think it is fair that I replace the bezel with another new 14k gold one in order to get a full return, as I am fully responsible for that portion of it. SO I'm going to get one, and send it back and make SURE that the shipment can be tracked online.
BTW, I think it would grade a solid MS-69 in an SGS slab, don't you? Look at the ravishing hair detail!!

I think you should add a little note telling him that if he'll send you the coin again your grade it at your grading serrvice JCSC (Johnny's Certified Slabbed Coins) as an MS70 PL STAR CAC

JCSC will also include a note on the slab for proof of authenticity...."the hair detail was re-engraved by the miss liberty model herself, as she was abhored by the US-mint's weakly struck portrayal of her lustrous features."
That coin will make a fortune. Move over SGS, you've got some competition.

All joking aside though. If he does in fact give me the refund as promised, this situation will be fully reconciled and his name will be clear in my book(though I will never buy from him again, and he doubtless has me blocked anyway). Maybe he didn't know it was counterfeit, and needed the faxes that I sent in to prove it? If he says I tried to "switch coins", then.....well, his intentions will be crystal clear to me and to everyone. What would I have to benefit by switching one counterfeit with another? and then to take a chance by sending him a different counterfeit to try to dupe him?
yeah, the chances of me switching coins are nil.....

I guess for the kind of money you have to take the chance to let him make it right, its just a scary situation to be in I would think. I hope everything works out and he pays you back smoothly with no problems

Quote: his name will be clear in my book If that happened to me his name would be in a book but not a cleared one. He tried to take advantage of you and has taken advantage of others. Your probably one of the few who fought back.

yeah, I see your point Amazon. By "clear in my book", I mean that I will publicly acknowlege that he did right in the end. Beyond that, I will let people make their own conclusions based on the thread. I, for one, have acquired more knowlege in the last 2 months about coins based on this experience than I ever had in all my 27 years on this earth. That knowlege is priceless, and I guarantee that I won't be making this mistake again, though I still have a lot to learn. I am so grateful to have this board as a "reality" ground(I know, kind of ironic since I'm talking to a computer screen...;-)). I may still be in a state of ignorant bliss about this coin and other coins if it weren't for the input I received here and on cointalk. It is great to have such a vast array of knowlegable people at access at my home computer and I'd like to thank you all for your support. John

I think he only did the right thing because you had all the evidence to support it. Yup, CC is a great place! So are you going to be in a market for another $3?

Yes, eventually. When I do though, it won't be purchased on ebay, and it will be in a slab from one of the top 3 TPGs. Although I've learned a lot about how to detect counterfeits, I still am not willing to completely trust my instincts in this series, given the high value and large number of fakes. I still like using ebay for lesser value coins(since they are counterfeited much less). I've had a lot of success working on my Dansco 70/70 album from ebay. The nearest coin shop is an hour away, so ebay is the easiest access, and I've gotten a few great deals. A matter of fact, I just got a nice NGC MS66 1943 silver nickel today in the mail for $10, and she is an absolute beaut! Many many coins are sold for WAY more than they are worth on ebay, but knowlege is key. I'm still relatively new to the hobby, but I'm getting better at discerning good buys from bad ones....though there is the "one man's junk is another's treasure factor" :-P Sorry to get off topic. John

Well @$#%! They sent me the wrong sized bezel! Now I don't have enough time. Maybe I should just keep it? Or should I send it back without a bezel?

can you not pick up one locally anywhere? sending it back without the bezel will just result in you not getting the refund and maybe not the coin back either

Get on the phone and call every jewelry store. Someone has to have it near you.
