I know I sound like a broken record on this, but my advice is to buy only certified gold dollars. Why take the chance? Are you really saving that much money?

Tom didn't have any certified gold. Only raw but I trust his judgement as I have dealt with him for several years

Let us know when NGC makes their grading, but I'm also not loving the authenticity on the 73.

"Tom" needs to get with the times. I'm an old guy too, and back in the late 1980s when slabbing was taking hold of the coin market, I resisted also. Later I had to give in.

Today a classic coin, which amounts to anything, that is still raw sets off alarm bells in my head. "Why is this coin NOT certifed?" Quite often if you look long enough you will see why.

I've been collector for over 55 years and was a dealer for 12 years. I can spot most counterfeits and problems, but I'm not perfect. At least when it's slabbed you have recourse either with the dealer or the grading company. I have used that rounte once, and it worked out for me when I stupidly bought a gold coin that had been treated with iodine to make it look old and "crusty."

I talked to Tom this morning and he said if it doesn't come back Mint state or it is a fake (He guaranteed both) (Since I only want mint state gold examples in my gold type set), then he would make it right and refund me my money or allow me to use the money on a different coin. It is always nice to get a sense of assurance from a good reputable dealer, and not have to worry about potentially losing money.

The other gold was previously in a second gen NGC holder au50. I know that'll straight grade. That's the one exception to my type set including $3 gold where I'll accept a non ms coin as ms coins for the type 2 and $3 cost thousands.

I forgot to update. 1873 gold dollar came back UNC details bent (My dealer refunded me and called BS on NGC, I used the money to get a PCGS ms62 1856 gold dollar). The 1855 came back a au53 like I thought it would. NGC also messed up on a 1899 P Morgan which was in a PCGS 64 holder prior and they deemed it a 63, needless to say I cracked it out and sent it to PCGS as that is where my coins are going for the foreseeable future cause NGC is so inconsistent and trying to usurp PCGS by any means.

He said that the 1873 gold dollar came back as "bent, details." I think that you can see the bend in the last photo from the "U" in "UNITED" to an area close to the last "A" in "ANERICA."

It all worked itself out in the end that's all that matters to me.
