It looks to me like it could either be plated or, because it weighs less, have has the copper removed. Does it look like zinc?

The silver toned coin is lighter than the other 1977 coin I have on hand. Wouldnt a plated coin weight more? (2.47g v 2.50g) If I am not mistaken 2.5% of the coin would be copper. If that copper was removed the weight should be around 2.44g. Upon scratching the edge to test for a plating it only revealed clean, silver toned metal underneath.

Based on that, I would say it is likely that someone removed the copper coating present on zinc cents.

Isn't it to heavy for the copper to have been removed? Shouldn't it be lighter than it is? Here's a picture next to a 43 I found earlier today as well.

When you scratched the edge, Did the color look exactly the same? Given that the zincolns are only 2.5% copper, it could make sense to me. Anyway, nice '43! They do look like that have about the same color....

I tried to get a picture but my cell can't get a picture that does any justice. To the naked eye it's visibly cleaner and shinier in that area that I scratched.

Well, the way I see it, It has to be either the copper removed or some crazy toning. Either way, a pretty cool coin.

It looks like it was part of a science experiment.

Wild Guess:
The penny was used as a *source* of copper for an electroplating event ...
... by someone who was expecting a whole lot more (pre-1982) copper.
Cheers,

Appears to have some cartwheel luster in the obverse picture. Does it cartwheel? More than likely, it has just had the plating removed.

It is a 1997, not a 1977- that would be a solid copper alloy coin. Quote: If I am not mistaken 2.5% of the coin would be copper. If that copper was removed the weight should be around 2.44g. The plating only makes up a small part of that percentage, the majority of the copper content is actually alloyed with the zinc core. The reverse picture is too small to see much fine detail but I see luster on the obverse so that would rule out post-mint stripped plating. Unfortunately, this is a very difficult error to definitively authenticate by photos alone but based on what I can see, it appears to be missing the copper plating and is a genuine error.
