I don't think the crack could be a cracked die. Part of that looks like a lamination error and part looks PSD. Let us see what others say. |

I wonder if it wasn't a clogged die/ strike through? Based upon the bust image seems shifted slightly right, around the eye and also the hair. Seems portion is overlapping? Hard to tell, wish had coin in hand, interesting!  |

Actually, the more I look at it, the more it seems like a foreign substance like some type of glue.

Mark1959 BINGO! the optics distortion is what got me to think shifting right, the dark "edge" is dirt/discoloration!  |

Thank you all for your responses! I took a close look at the dime and I'm pretty dang sure there isn't a foreign substance on the coin (other than the dirty 'edge'). I was able to snap some "zoomed-in" photos. Hopefully they help!   Edited by coindawg

I'll go with peeled lamination. There's a difference in rim height that wouldn't be as precise if it was just glue, and on the right edge of the picture, you can see the spot on the rim where the lam seems to have tapered off. I'd also be interested in seeing the reverse too though.

I'll jump again! The 45° angle pix do look like the area is "incuse" as one said, looks like the whole area is incuse, meaning ate off by some sort of caustic agent...acid or concentrated chemical cleaner etc. Can you tell when looking at coin if that is so, sometimes even pix are foolers, stick with the Mark 1 issued eyeball for sure!

If the material was removed off the coin, then it should be lighter in weight.
