Well, I don't think any value at all was added.

all steps taken beyond WD40 (questionable in it's own right) will ruin 99% of value to any coin subjected to this treatment.
nothing lost by doing this to these cents, but please save yourself the heartache and don't try this on anything collectable.

Quote: The collector value of these coins is gone. In the condition they were in in the before pictures, they didn't have any to start with. They couldn't lose something they didn't have.

I can't tell if your use of asterisks is sarcasm or not. For stuff way past saving (like that zinc rot penny that will self-destruct anyway), or things that will only ever be worth their material worth, fair game.
But to do this to anything collectible is very selfish. We are the temporary caretakers of history. These objects will outlast our generation, and will eventually be passed down to the next generation for their enjoyment and education. Not unlike how it ended up in our hands in the first place.
How would you feel if someone took a wrecking ball to the Pyramid of Khufu, because they thought it looked like an eyesore?

to a point . . Our coins will hopefully be around long after we're gone. Just like some of them have been around long before we got here. They were pocket change, used for commerce. They were flipped, tossed, handled without gloves . . and sometimes even cleaned. Granted, rare and valuable coins should be handled with care to preserve them for future generations, but that's not what the OP was dealing with here. Just my 2 cents . .

My analogy may have been too harsh but OP has cleaned and polished other coins before. I want to point out shiny does not always equal good.

Think of it what you will, then. I'll just leave this quote here: "Our own generation enjoys the legacy bequeathed to it by that which preceded it."
