The Talons are known to be bad on some of these coins.

I did not know that -- so thanks for that bit of information.

I happen to like SBA's. I keep every one that comes my way.

I standby my grade and have been wrong but with apparent luster and strike and given photos it looks ms63 to me..The OP may not have the knowledge you havy Crazyb0 and have thought that since it was an S mint it was a proof.. It happens and is okay.. In this photos provided I dont seem to see any wear on the high points cheek, button, hair..

That had me confused. I don't see signs of wear and yet the talons were just blobs. It seems that every coin -- even every year -- has its own foibles. I read a few articles on grading SBA's (trying to learn) but they were all about the last few top grades so I resorted to PCGS photograde. Nice pics there and that's when I got focused on the talons.

It's good to learn.

By the way, until a few months before I joined this site, I thought that all S Mint Marks were proofs.

Did a little bit of manipulation on OP's coin. Do this on coins when I'm looking to buy, just to highlight the imperfections...you decide.

Thanks all for your knowledge. I thought that the S mint mark was a proof, because many sources I found on the Internet said that there are two types of proof-S mint marks, filled (like I have) and clear. I guess I was wrong. Always learning something new here!

Crazyb0, what did you do to the photo of my coin? Were you trying to make it look in a worse grade?

True Numismatist, that's a trick I developed to help me on deciding on buying a coin or in determining if its a fake. All the "uglies" come out to play. The higher contrast enhances outline of the devices and shows any pebbling in the fields (flat), the true sign of a cast fake, also shows tooling marks and obvious blemishes. Yes I know it "looks" terrible but that is how I can honestly tell you the coin has seen some circulation, that right there puts it at the highest possible grade of AU-58...because there is slight wear it becomes a solid AU-55, not bad for a coin that's on a world tour!

No, that is correct -- there are two types of proof-S mint marks, but there is also an S-mint business strike for the SBA dollar, which is what you have.

Interesting discussion on the worst-looking coin in our nation's long history.

Gotta Admit, SBA's are just about the shortest lived series of American coins. It was even brought back for an encore before being booed off stage

The other was the Flying Eagle, where the mint figured they didn't want the public to think they were getting the bird first!

Over the centuries and in most every country, coin sculptors typically depicted their subjects in the most flattering manner as an inspiring symbol on its nation's coinage. Susan B. Anthony may have been many things, but this hawk-nosed harpie image hardly lifts one's spirits, like most of Frank Gasparro's output.

I have yet to see a single flattering image of SBA, so I can't fault Frank Gasparro for that. He just didn't have much to work with there.
