Very nice find! These can be tough to nail down without the markers theres a few that are so similar I found 003 a few weeks ago-that was the closest match I'm still not 100% on mine tho. Yours does seem like a match to the one tropical referenced

One light please. Micro photos work better with just one light source. I think I see light in all four directions on this one. Light and shadows make an image. Too much light removes what is really going on with a coin.

You'd see almost all shadows if I used the one desk lamp I have. The full coin shot is using just the lamp because I can get far enough away with my phone camera to avoid creating shadows with the phone. The other shots require me to use a macro lens on my phone camera (i.e. get within about an inch of the coin), which makes it so I can't get lighting from my lamp. I did my best to get a second light to reflect over the surface in a way that stays true to what I was seeing through a 10x loupe using only the lamp. I thought I'd done a decent job using my phone and a $10 macro lens, but maybe you can give me some pointers on how to improve. I don't know how I'd get a single light source to work with what I've got.

John, you're suggesting I use an LED flashlight? Or just pointing out that's what this looks like I used?

Wow, quite the setup. I don't know if I'll be able to recreate anything with that level of sophistication, but I'll try to get better lighting if I can. Thanks for all that info.

I am suggesting you use only a hand held LED light. That is what I use when I use my USB scope to take and post pics. John1

I thought the original photos were some of the best I've seen on this board other than just a few folks who are really into getting good images. Why mess with a great thing. It took me about 10 seconds to ID a 1983 DDO, something that would be entirely impossible with almost any other photos of such a difficult year to separate the DDO's. I say carry on and if you wish to tinker around with better photos please do so but I don't think it to be an immediate issue at all.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was getting a bit worried that maybe the discussion about getting better photos implied that what I was seeing as a DD was not. I'll play around with getting some better lighting, although it might not be in the cards at the moment. =]

Your photos are not the issue here, as they are very, very good. Not sure why the thread went that way. Your coin is undisputedly DDO-008 and it is only because of your awesome photos that this can be said.

This may sound weird but since pennies are hard to photo without lighting issues, I use the light above my stove since it is weak and I have a galaxy s7 so I zoom in all the way without direct lighting and I get pretty good pictures. Hope this helps!

Interesting. I am using an S7 as well. I will probably just have to put up with a little bit of glare, unfortunately. I keep trying to bounce the light and diffuse it, but can't seem to get things to look any better.
