The first one is ugly, plain and simple. If the toning were centered, maybe. The second, not so bad, just enough to be interesting. Still not a fan, but we've all seen worse.

Not a fan of the first one but the second one to me looks like album toning. I actually like that one.

Congrats on the great price!

I'm gonna be the oddball here but #1 & 2 look artificially toned by a decent heat source. They would never grade these days (not that would ever be submitted)

#3 has some subdued and attractive toning kinda framing the coin and not detracting from it. Nice coin

The toning was caused by the cardboard insert in the holder, it is not "assisted" toning. I bet some axial lighting photography would make the colors pop quite a bit more Silver Eagles are almost pure silver, they are much more reactive and tone more readily than 90% coinage.

Biokemist, Dollar man may be able to post better pix, it is quite the circular rainbow!

That's a good deal right there: you turned forty bucks into THREE ASEs! I was in the artificial toning camp for the first coin too. I don't get why it would seemingly flake off under AMERICA on the reverse.

the toning looks rich, gorgeous and natural to me I am a toning lover though so of course I love it..I'm not sure how to describe my reasoning here, but I am really good at spotting when a coin is off, whether it's cleaning or toning, and on that note I think this coin displays natural, beautiful toning from the holder and not artificial toning. the reason it appears to flake off is cause it was likely lightly touched or grazed by someone's finger(note the eagle's tale as well), blocking the toning..it can be seen on many toners.

To my untrained eyes, that area by the eagle's tail looks like something was scraped off there, but I can buy your reason that something was on the coin that prevented toning. But only over there. I can't get beyond the flaked appearance on the part under AMERICA. Looking at the ring of coloring on the coin, it looks like the ring of blue was there, then was removed. Note how the same hue of blue rides right up to the edge of the eagle's wing? It would be difficult to accidentally smudge in that area -- you would have to intentionally trace along the wing.

Crazy got those two toners for twenty bucks each, and is swapping the first one to thedollarman for two untoned ones.

I did miss that. I thought it was an even trade for both. Great trade up.
