As a geologist who worked underground across Canada in gold
mines, I am in complete agreement that this commemoration
of the 175th Anniversary of the GSC would have been a great
coin to own and good recognition of the efforts of those
early surveying geologist pioneers who travelled along the
rivers, mountains and shorelines to open up Canada. Were
it not for the efforts of these brave explorers we would
not be where we are today. Too bad they wouldn't listen Roger.

Much to my surprise, I received a response and a phone call from Pierre Justino, Director Product Development. I won't bother with the details, but given the current design scheduling, the chances of anything being struck this calendar year are slim to nil...

The fact that I received a response to my letter (which was not the nicest letter I have ever written) was quite surprising however, and I appreciated that...

Thanks to everyone here for the moral support... if you are curious, this is a website that a team of us put together. This was 18 months of hard work, and celebrates the 175th anniversary of the GSC, in 175 objects:

I wonder if there would be time to produce a privy-marked silver maple leaf for the anniversary? Not the same as a full, standalone coin, but far less design time would be needed for the privy mark. At least the anniversary would be recognized! Maybe there's still time!

A really great effort, and a fantastic coin design, but come on, you're asking the impossible.

I wouldn't call that asking for the impossible. The RCM asks people to submit their suggestions 2 years in advance. SPP contacted the RCM 4 years before the anniversary; that twice more than what the RCM says (I'm stating the obvious to emphasize my point).

Quote:

Coin Theme Suggestion Process
1. Submissions for non-circulation (collector) or circulation coins may be sent to:
Pierre Justino
Director Product Development
Royal Canadian Mint
320 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0G8
themes@mint.ca

In order to properly evaluate a submission, it is suggested that the following information be included:

Theme or anniversary and any relevant dates or celebratory events;
Any relevant promotional activity surrounding the theme or anniversary;
Background information (i.e. historical, Web links);
Requestor's contact information;

***

4. If a theme is tied to an anniversary, the submission should be made at least two calendar years out as product marketing and production plans are developed well in advance.

Something tells me that the RCM watches this forum like hawks now...

Possibly a good thing?

I don't remember Her (I believe female) forum name, but the mint did have a rep participating on this forum some years ago. Regrettably, after a few confrontational conversations, we haven't heard from her since.

I doubt it... go back to my first post. I had emailed the director...

@spp, I suppose your only mistake was assuming that the RCM is interesting in promoting important Canadian themes and events, not cartoon characters. Silly me, I would have made the same mistake.

It is nice to get a call, I suppose, from the RCM, but I guess it is easier to apologize after it is too late, rather than to do the important thing at the right time.

As an aside, think of the lost business opportunity! they could have had a set of coins, each one with a different ore sample glued to it.

I can tell you SPP-Ottawa I have pointed the mints attention here more than one time in my 17 years to show them what their real customers are saying/thinking. If they are not paying attention to what people that are using their hard earned dollars to purchase then they are making a grave error. I know I have used information and feedback I have read here and passed it onto people of influence at Gatewest several times. You guys and gals are the fuel of this hobby and the real reason I am able to provide for my family. Ignoring your voice and desires would be foolhardy. I for one feel strongly that the mint does use forums like this to gauge the public's interest and desire for products they produce. Please continue to push for what you want to see and tell us what you don't want to see. That feedback is essential to trying to make the best products possible.

Thanks - I received a similar message by email from Steven Bromberg... In hindsight, I should have sought out both Gatewest and Mr. Bromberg as "people of influence" four years ago when I embarked upon this exercise...

This thread is the end of the road for my attempt. Experience is the best teacher, and I figured I would pass my experiences along to others. Heck, if it would not cost me so darned much, I would even order a batch of privy marked silver maple leaf coins... but I think the minimum order is 10,000 ounces... ugh...

I very much doubt anyone from the Mint officially reads these threads. To that point, they set up their own 'by invitiation' forum recently and 'borrowed' the name "Coin Talk" . IMO, that is not listen to your customers, it's controlling their narrative. If that forum results in any thing useful, never mind good market research, I would be shocked.

That said, I choose not to participate because of the overly intrucive information demands from the Mint and from what I've read, some of those who did sign up, provided fiction as their profile data. Sadly, garbage in, garbage out.

I signed up with the mints forum, they've ask me to take a couple surveys but stated I do not have permission to discuss the survey or share the pictures or information.
Might have bothered me had they shown me anything I was interested in.
More of the same junk in massive amounts is coming our way unfortunately.

Lately, I feel that Canada Post is doing a much better job at commemorating our history than the RCM.

I'm going to retract my earlier statement... Canada Post's offering this month is highly disappointing from a commemorative standpoint.

Even Canada Post's marketing department seems to have given up, entitling the latest Star Trek release as "Star Trek: Year Two". Brilliant... lol

@CC-Ottawa

Yes I signed up for the RCM coin talk forum. They never asked intrusive questions. They show me upcoming coins and ask me to choose. They also ask if I would purchase some of these coins. I will always state the truth. If I have no interest in buying what they are showing, I simply state NO.
