This is actually rather low grade for one of these coins. They were saved in quantity in AU and "slider Unc." I have a worn one with some golden color still visible in the letters. It was one of the first coins I even collected when I was in the 6th grade. My father bought it for me at the Gimbels store in New York as one of those "ten Liberty nickels, dates of our choice" deals.

Right - handled and resold many of these over 40 years, but hardly remember any below AU. Somehow the fire must have spread at the time about the lack of a denomination on the coin - the hoarding was surely not just a first-year-of-issue thing.
