Thanks for the link. The different opinions are what confused me. I got it for a good price, though (quite a bit cheaper than vcoins) and it is cool to own something so old from an area I haven't collected from before. The Sumerians did make beads out of shells (you can sometimes find them for sale) so I can see this being a use for shells as well. I've heard differing opinions about Celtic "ring money" as well (one source said most of it was actually horse tack).

Very interesting piece. I wasn't aware that the Sumerians produced proto money.

Paul, I think you were just joshing, but just in case.... I have purchased a few cuneiform tablets and cones over the years, and have done volunteer work for a few years at the Oriental Institute in Chicago in its museum, where I regularly saw the Sumerian rings display. I have logged many hours in the OI library with its resources on Assyriology (not my field), and I have briefly studied Akkadian in a classroom with an Assyriologist, in addition to doing grad work there mostly in West Semitic languages and literatures. My Ph.D. is in Hebrew Bible. Do you think it would be okay for me to inquire about Sumerian shell rings, yet?

Wow what a clever clogs you are! I barely speak English and don't know what Assyriology is ^^

Lately I've been doing some research on Sumerian and Babylonian history and how they relate to the history of the Levant, the near and middle east, and the Bible. I've been wanting to buy a Cuneiform tablet but they are expensive so that's going to have to wait a while.

Quote: Sorry, but I'm just noticing now that it has already been sold. Ah. As so often, a little too late. I would have loved to add a couple of those rings to my early Mesopotamian section, so if you ever see them come up again, gives us a shout, please. And thanks for mentioning them in the first place. I normally don't think of Vcoins that way.

Ron, depending on your definition of "expensive", you may be interested to know that there is a Cuneiform tablet listed in the latest Pegasi Numismatics auction catalog. Opening bid is $295 and BIN is $400.

In (delayed) response to Justinokay's question, the diameter of my Sumerian protocurrency is about 24mm.
