Wowzer - Oh jeepers, don't take my opinion too seriously. What you think it's worth is most important.
Buy the coin and not the slab that says it's this or that grade. It's a nice one alright but there's probably a big difference between XF45 and AU55 prices. Don't bail out on my/our estimates.

Look at this mushy detailed AU58 with a CAC sticker too.
The one you were looking at had superior strike but that's the whole thing with these.
They have their quirks by date and mintmark. Do your homework and buy what grabs ya. Best of luck.

Well here's the thing... first off, I'm sure your opinion counts for a lot. You're The Nickel Guy and you have 5000+ posts here so you know a thing or two about coins, no doubt.

I searched auction histories for examples of AU55...and what I saw surprised me a bit. I saw some coins that weren't significantly nicer than this. So the low price on this one still seemed to be legit in some way.

However, I did see a couple that were clearly better.

All of this just confirms what I've been seeing in my beginner coin viewing. You can have 5 coins in 5 holders with the same grade and be looking at pretty significant differences. I'm really starting to figure out what you mean by 'Buy the coin, not the holder' and the prices I see being paid at auction reflect that. I found a Buff in Coinfacts the other day that the Price Guide said was $300, and there were several coins in the 'Auction Results' column selling for around that, and then there was one that sold for $1200. I thought it was a mistake, until I clicked through and saw the coin. An incredible example, obviously misgraded.

Wait, what? With a CAC sticker? Oh man...that's hard to believe right there. Okay, thanks for that. I'll post here if I end up buying this coin.

Um, XF 45? For sure not a 55.

A lot has to do with eye appeal and then a closer inspection. If you ever get to a coin show and look at the thousands of coins in cases on display, some seem to jump right out you while the others lie there quietly waiting and nobody even notices them.
I try to collect coins that stand out in the crowd. There will come a day when those coins have to be sold again and if they jumped out at me, they will do the same for someone later.
and honestly ... I am not a very good grader.

I'm not a smart man ... but I know what a nice coin is.

Good night!

Yep, that seems to be the consensus around here, 45. I'm really trying to search for deep value in my first buys,to make up for noob mistake and reduce tuition costs.

Let's see what this can actually be had for. It's rare enough that it's likely a good deal at the right price.
Rest in Peace

I'm going to make this short and sweet . I would not have graded this Buff any higher than EF-40+ . Buy the coin ,not the holder !

Exactly what I need and like - straight and to the point.

I'm new to all this, and I've never encountered any market where the old phrase 'Buyer Beware' is more appropriate. I could start 5 threads a day here but I'm trying to hold off. Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to post. It's very helpful.

I'd have said EF-45 tops. Next time, please give us at least 48 hours to reply!

Okay, I just figured out what you meant. This is how new I am. You meant 'Don't post the reveal until everyone has time to reply'! I didn't get it, I thought you meant 'wait to say thanks and goodbye'!

Which is actually cool, that you want to participate. Definitely get it now. Thanks for the good advice.

In case anyone's interested, the coin sold for $161 + fees tonight. It went past my max bid as determined by comments here and by examination of other AU coins from past auctions...

Thanks for the update, perhaps that is a fair price it fetched. Keep hunting.

I'm surprised it made it to an AU-55 slab without any luster showing. I agree with the other at EF-45.
