Well, I think I should finally take a chance on a raw coin. I can get the 1861 $5 raw for $330. Melt is $314.55. I figure I'll come out OK as long as it's Genuine.

I'd buy it for $330 in a heartbeat. Better date, Civil War date and in decent condition. Worst case it's a $400 piece in AU Details and it looks better than that.

Would it be worth another $30 to have it sent off to PCGS for certification?

If the gouge in the cheek is an old one then I'd go for it. If you can see fresh metal anywhere in that gouge then keep it raw.
