I examined the reverse of the 78 and I think it's a large denticals. What do you think? Also the first A points in between denticals while the other A's in Canada point to the denticals.

it is a large for sure. When you find a small it is very obvious you can't miss it. I don't think the letters pointing at denticles or between is a factor with this coin.
Nice coins by the way.

I find for the '78 ID that the number of denticles that the letter N in Canada spans gives a good idea. The N spans 3 for the large denticles and 4 for the small.
As shown in your pic the N spans 3 denticles .Thus the large denticle variety.

Thanks! Most informative! Here is another look at the 1980, still think it's the far beads. Any easier to tell for sure loonielewy with this image?

This one is alot harder to tell. The way I tell, is if the diameter of the bead fits between the bead itself and the rim, touching both, then its a near bead. If the bead diameter fits between the bead and the rim with clearance between the bead and the rim, then it is the far bead.
Basically it is the far bead, when you fit another bead diameter between the bead and the rim and it is "loose".
I just looked at the 2 I have, the near bead is VERY close to the rim. If your bead dia. fits "loose" then you know what you have.
I still think yours is Far.
Thanks for spurring me to look at these again.

I just got the 1978 small denticles in the mail today. The difference is very noticeable! Under magnification I was able to see the number of denticles that span the N in Canada.

I'm having trouble discerning between the 1980 FB and NB. Looking at this illustration I am still not certain. Does the FB mean the beads are far from the rim or far from the letters? And the same for the NB?

Congrat's on the 78 small dent. Side by side it is evident isn't it. The beads are near or far from the inside of the rim, not to the letters on the 1980.

Is the near beads and far beads just a minor variety? Looking on ebay, none of the listings for the 1980 quarter are identified as such. Further I find it odd that the slabbed coins don't have the attribute printed on the label at all for this variety.

Just as a point of reference, do the quarters generally have near beads? I compared my 1980 and 1981 and the 1981 beads are closer to the rim than the 1980 I have. I have been using digital camera pictures and zooming in on them in editing software.

The coin on the right is my new coin and the left is one I had and believe is the far beads.

Thanks Rocky. I just needed a second opinion on my new quarter. I was thinking it was a near beads but I wasn't certain. I have been examining several digital photos I took in different angles and using a magnifying glass. They are both PL. I noticed the seller took the near beads coin from a double dollar set and the far beads I got from a standard PL set. My eyes are quite strained at the moment. This is where I got the near beads from:

Minor perhaps for the PL strikes but for the business strikes there is a sharp difference between the the higher grades. MS-64 for the FB is $15 and the same grade for NB is $40. Goes even higher in M-65 and M-66 grades. The PL strikes of any grade are the same.
