Quote: Cents of that year were made by a core: 99.2% Zinc, .8% Copper - and plated: 100% Copper. I thought they had a 100% zinc core with a 100% copper plating and the percentages were 97.5 zinc and 2.5 copper.

What you have there is a dryer cent. The edge is worn away from rolling in a dryer drum exposing the zinc.

The 1982 cores were 100% zinc, they added that trace of copper to the core starting in 1983 to improve the bonding of the copper plating to the core.

Wow, I was at a loss for explaining that one. Have to say that in my 50 years I've never seen a penny do that , or rather, look like that. Thank you for all the input.
