One tip on ebay coinage anything over say $50.00 and gold&silver or even a cent I would make sure it graded by a TPG like NGC PCGS or ANACS.

If it's a fake it's a pretty good one. As far as I can tell it closely matches an NGC-slabbed example on Heritage. The Heritage coin does not however have that raised line that I see below the third "puff" in Liberty's headdress. I'm thinking that could be a die crack.
I'd grade it maybe VF-35 and as such it could be a decent buy at $828 or so with shipping. The seller does offer a 3-day return if item is not as described. I would only bite if I first got a commitment from the seller that they would extend the return privilege until I could have it authenticated.

I would trust the person with only one coin for sale, more than I would trust the person with multiple coins that look fake. I would just think this is someone selling their inheritance. I wouldn't buy anything of that value on ebay though, I would go to a coins shop. TPG slabs aren't a guarantee anymore either, they can be fake also.

Look carefully at the central area on the reverse in between the kernals on top. Do you see those raised bumps on the area outside of the kernals? Are those on the NGC slabbed coin? I may be wrong, but I don't think those should be there. My counterfeit has the same raised bumps, and multiple dealers claimed that as a sign of a counterfeit. I haven't seen those markings on a genuine $3 gold, but I may be wrong. Please enlighten me with a picture if you can. :-)
thanks

I'll just say two things. When ANACS started up they reported that over 2/3rd of all of the 3 dollar gold pieces submitted were fake. Second during the 1979/80 gold and silver hysteria Silvertowne bought thousands of those Liberty/Saint-Gaudens/indian gold type sets, and almost without exception the type II dollars and three dollar gold pieces in them were fake. I may hate the grading services but even I will say that unless you REALLY know what you are doing, the three dollar gold should only be purchased certified or under the condition that you can get a refund if it won't certify as genuine.

I have not purchased gold coins for just this reason (oh, and I can not afford them) but feel what amac44 has said is great advice. I have a tough time buying something from ebay over a certain price (and gold would be in there) if it is not graded by a well known grading service. It still amazes me how many people grade coins in their basement, put them in a slab, have a name similar to a well known grading company and then sell them at PCGS prices. Just be careful when you buy, but the fact that he is selling only car parts and then has this one single stunner of a coin should send up warning signals. The other things that bothers me is: 1. he only sells one coin and went to all the effort to make a banner for it and 2. the type-o of 1857 ans 1854 in the text, anyone selling a coin would not make such a big blunder. My advice is to run as fast as you can and get away from it unless he will do what Conder101 suggested.

Here are images of a PCGS example from Heritage which sold for $1495 last year. The grade is XF45. I can see the features that Johnny54321 is talking about on the ebay coin. They certainly could be bad news but I can't be sure from the photo. The design features of the coin look OK. If I could get that return guarantee from the seller, and if I were looking for a 3-dollar princess, I might consider bidding on this coin. He does take PayPal so that provides some security.

1sikevo I do see some possible faint similarities on the area you pointed out Jaobler, but it is tough to tell. I may be paranoid and overanalyzing. How do you tell the difference between a die crack and raised lines made by a counterfeiter trying to cover his tracks? Or mint induced raised lumps vs. counterfeit raised lumps? With this type of coin, I'd rather err on the side of caution if ANYTHING jumps out at me as being funny.....even on a certified coin. I love the education I receive on this board, and all of your opinions are invaluable.

since we are on the subject....here is a $3 gold on ebay that I have been lusting over the last several days. Not directly related to the topic, but thought I'd share anyways. As it is only graded XF, it is still relatively affordable, but it looks exceptionally nice IMO for an XF. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WA:IT&ih=007

Wow Johnny, that 1868 is a nice coin! It certainly looks better to me than the PCGS XF-45 1857 coin from Heritage. The seller has 100% positive feedback and a 10-day return policy, plus he takes PayPal. If your budget allows, this looks like a possible winner! PS: only 6 hours to go as of this posting!

yeah, she definitely has the eye appeal of a higher grade coin. There must be some reason PCGS only gave it an XF-40, but it sure looks nicer in the pictures. Its definitely the nicest I've seen for the grade, and it is a very low mintage coin, which gives it bonus points. Very tempting...i'd need to pull a few strings, but we'll see. However, I have a feeling that this one will sell for even more than the PCGS listed price.
